The
His Dark Materials series has been described as "
The chronicles of Narnia for atheists". I think that's an exaggeration. The outrage is because some people say the books insult Christianity and God. From what I perceived when I read the books, what Philip Pullman attacks are the bad aspects of institucionalised religion in general (be it Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc.) and not Christianity itself.
In conclusion, I think people are blowing the issue way out of proportion.
