If the parents shack up, get divorced, drop out of school...or choose bad partners…then the kids learn that is the norm. They learn that there are no commitments in life, or that when the going gets tough…the tough quit.
Plus factor in society in general, and how materialistic and superficial it has all become…

If it's all in the parenting, then please explain why three children, all parented by the same mom in the same way, didn't ALL learn the things you describe. #1 and #3 are model citizens, with no problems. #1 was an honor student in high school, has been living on his own since he turned 19, working full time, and will add college to that in September. #3 is in high school, an honor student, working part time, and an all around good kid. #2 is the ONLY one of the three to be the rebellious, devil may care type.
They have all three been brought up in the church, with morals and values. With oldest dd, they just don't seem to have "stuck."
