On more that one occasion I've asked Dd "Is it time to go to bed? Your behavior is telling me that you are too tired right now."
I've made her aware that when she's tired she gets cranky, so she understands that if I put her to bed early because of being to tired... it's not a punishment, but a solution. (well as much as a 4 year old can. LOL) sigh
