Actually that's not true. A true food allergy, as opposed to a food intolerance, causes anaphylaxis, which can be life threatening. More info:

Both my kids are severely allergic to nuts. They can't eat ANYTHING with nuts/nut oils. They require Benadryl and an Epi-pen available at all times in case of a reaction. And that's just to hold them over until they can get to the ER.
