I would say that if my son was going, then I would be going with him. Regardless of how well I knew them or how close. Just to be there for my child.
I also see it as my child's family, is my family. At least in the cordial sense.

My brothers ex wife and father of his child, is still my SIL in the sense that if someone close to her passed then I would attend or send flowers if I could not. I would be there to support her children
