Our cabinet locks work well. They aren't locks per se though. They are hooks that are on the inside of the cabinet and you can open them about an inch, just enough to stick a finger in and push down so it doesn't stick on the hook (hope that makes sense). My 3 year old has yet to figure it out. It also turned out to be Grandma proof. When we put them on, she came over to baby sit the next day and we forgot to tell her about them, she couldn't open any of the drawers while we were out.

Gates are good up to a point. Ours anchor to the wall and worked until about 6 months ago. My son didn't learn how to open them properly, but he did learn that brute force would.

Another thing to have is door handle covers. My son is an expert at opening doors he shouldn't, so these are a god send to protect him.
