Regardless of the values, to her it was strife. It doesn't have to be something anyone approves of, it was a hardship. Otherwise, she wouldn't have had to be thrown out. I am not saying anything is right or wrong, I am saying it is strife.

Maturity comes in stages and might not look the same for everyone. IF nothing else, she is recognizing her limitations and going into the Marines. If she recognizes her inability to get along with her birth family as a limitation that she cannot overcome, that is a sign of maturity. It might not be comfortable, it might not be ideal, but she is still taking care of herself and recognizing her limits.
