I don't remember what the scream movies had in them so I don't know appropriate they are, but yay I have to agree that SOME R movies are not appropriate, while others it depends on the kid.
My sister took her 8 year old son to go see Harry Potter (first one he saw in the theater) it is PG_13, but she went first to make sure she felt it was ok for him to watch it. He LOVED it.
