Default What Surprised You Most About Delivering?

Looking back, I have so many funny stories about delivering my kids. Most of them center around how little I knew about how things worked. And I honestly consider myself fairly intelligent.

I think the biggest shock I had (with my first) was that when your water breaks, it's not a one-time thing. I was about 4 weeks early with her and it broke in the middle of the night (in bed). I got up and went to the phone (freaking out, of course) and then proceeded to get amniotic fluid on both living room chairs and the couch, before I realized that every time I sat down, I was gonna do it. It would stop when I stood, but as soon as I sat down, it would start leaking again. It's definitely one of those things that I wished (at the time) someone had mentioned previously.

What things were "learning experiences" for the rest of you? Even though I'm not having any more kids of my own, I thought it might be a way to share some tips with some of the ladies who are currently expecting their first.
