 | 10 yr old girl, massive learning probs | | Hello,
first, excuse my typing....i´m wearing a cast on my hand so plz excuse.
Im the stepfather of a 10 yr old girl. I am german, my wife and stepdaughter israeli. We moved to germany last year in june.
Assya, my daughter, is very talented when it comes to languages.
She grew up with hebrew, russian and english.
She picked up everyday german very easily and wuickly. At school she earned plenty of respect through her teachers.
Problem:
She doesn´tn lear for school.
Homework is always a massive mission with lots of tears and shouting from her.
She does it like this: She reads a text for science wher it says:
"The compass´ needle is magnetic and is attracted by the magnetic northpole...."
At the end of the text is a question asking:
"How does the compass fuction?"
When she needs to answer that question, we always find us looking into totally clueless eyes. "i don´t know!"
My wife, from my point of view, waits for 2 or three wines and then starts her way of explaining and after 2 minutes says:
"So.....the compass needle is magnetic......"
Assya then gets the answer served from her mom.
My wife then tells me that she is only a kid and needs help.
My opinion is more strict, I want her to show some effort and try to find answers herself.
Me and my wife then always argue about our different teaching styles, she says you need to help her by assisting her with answers and solutions, i say she needs to find answers and solutions before she will be helped with the solutions.
any advice?
Thanksfor plenty of replies in advance

Children: Nichole | Re: 10 yr old girl, massive learning probs | | welcome to the board and your English is quite good.
Anyways, does your step daughter truly have learning disabilities such as dyslexia? Or is she just stubborn and does not want to learn the material. I would say that your wife may be hindering her from learning BUT if she has true problems, your duaghter may benefit more from a tutor that knows how to get through to a child with learning problems. |

 | Re: 10 yr old girl, massive learning probs | | She´s sure not dyslexic but extremeley stubborn.
She already gets extra german lessons 2-3 times a week.
In that subject she doesn´t have any probs....accept an idiot teacher.

Children: One boy, Bradley | Re: 10 yr old girl, massive learning probs | | I would try making learning fun.
I don't know what your country is like, but here, they have all kinds of neat stores where you can buy books and fun science experiments to teach kids about how things work, without being boring.
There are also some cool fun videos like Bill Nye the Science Guy and stuff...
Get involved and find ways to help and bond with her at the same time. :-) |

 | Re: 10 yr old girl, massive learning probs | | Hi We had been trying different homework-help web sites for my daughter until we were introduced to BeeStar. It designs skill practice program to help students master what they learned in school. The weekly exercises strengthen my son’s skills, bring deeper understanding to concepts, and provoke interests.I think this website is a great way to keep children interested in studying. |

Children: One boy 8, twin girls 7. | Re: 10 yr old girl, massive learning probs | | I agree that each child has a different way of learning. You just have to find HER way. Your way may not be HER way, your wifes way may not be HER way. I have the same problem with my daughter. She has difficulty sorting it all out in her head and then somewhere between her head and her hand it gets mixed up. She's very intelligent and KNOWS but she has a hard time with saying what she means and sometimes has a hard time writing it down. For instanace....My daughter can spell words correctly on paper but when spelling them verbally to me she gets mixed up. I have heard from teachers that it is normal and they will eventually get it. Try and remember your daughter is only 10, that's still VERY young and sometimes as parents we expect too much from them. If you turn her off to learning now she is NOT going to want to learn when she's an adult. Be careful. Don't get frustrated, be patient and understanding. |

 | Re: 10 yr old girl, massive learning probs | | I know there are many students who are having difficulties in school and after some time, they feel there is no hope and they pretty much hate school and learning.
There is a way out of this! You must focus on getting your child excited about learning. Unfortunately, you can't do this on your own. Kids today enjoy a multimedia experience.
I recommend trying some online learning softwares + 1 on 1 online tutoring. With the right tutor and program, your child can do a complete 180. This will result in better grades, attitude and confidence.
