  | Re: Gifted Kid? | | I just found out that they are planning on cutting the "talented and gifted program" in our town due to the budget. It's probably so they can allocate more money for the special ed program b/c it seems like 3/4 of the kids are labeled in one way or another! |

Children: son Jonah and daughter Ellie | Re: Gifted Kid? | | I'm not sure if there is really a point to try to figure out if your child is gifted. We are on the "let him be" side kind of parents. For example, our son is very fascinated with puzzles while we never really encouraged (or discouraged) it. He's been doing a 60 pieces puzzles himself since like 2.5 years of age. He is now 2y.9m. and has been doing a 100 pieces puzzle with little to no help. He is also pretty good in drawing (something my husband and I are terrible at). But we really would not try to find out if he is gifted. Even if he is, then what? Pushing him into "practicing" more? this is not something we would ever do anyway. So we just let him be. He'll grow, explore, learn and if there is something he's really interested/good at, then it's up to him to take a responsibility for it's studding/learning. |

Children: Ian, 12, and Ariane, 16 | Re: Gifted Kid? | | I disagree, Yulia. There is a reason to find out if your child is gifted when school rolls around. At least here there is.
My kids were able to take wonderful advanced electives in our Academically Gifted program. Here in NC it is now called AG. GT refers to the educational theory that all children have gifts and talents and the school will nurture them. True, but not the same as AG, which I think is what you are referring to.
They had electives on architecture, ecology, Shakespeare (they put on a production of Midsummer Nights Dream), optical illusions...all in elementary school.
So, it is good to identify them.

| Re: Gifted Kid? | | I think there are legitimate reasons to test some kids. One of my nieces scored in the 90th percentile on the SAT - and she was 12. She would have been bored and/or probably picked on in most regular classes. She now is part of Johns Hopkins "Genius" program and loves it. Her 2 sisters are incredibly smart, but not at that extraordinarily high level. They have their interests and needs met by their school without additional help like their sister. |

Children: One boy 8, twin girls 7. | Re: Gifted Kid? | | So far my child has been in the gifted program for almost a month and it's nothing like what I thought. He came home telling me all about the emmancipation proclamation (sp), what year, who was president and secretary of state. I didn't remember that. The way things are now of days it can't hurt to have all this on a resume. The college I want is FSU and they offer so much so gifted or very high GPA would be well rewarded. Not sure what the future holds but why not feed their little brains. I remember so much from his age. I believe in feeding it. Enrichment is a wonderful gift and I'm so glad my children's school offered it. |
