total waste of time to argue with someone who aren't interested to even find out first what she's talking about. |

Children: One boy 8, twin girls 7. | Re: Gifted Kid? | | I did read about it enough to know it would not be for my children. Keeping a child/ren in a bubble or a single community is wrong in my opinion. I don't think it's giving them survival skills to fit in with regular society. It's all good if your children are going to stay in your little community but what will happen if they go to say....New York? They'll be eaten alive. Why is everything always "argueing" with you? Get over yourself already. |

Children: son Jonah and daughter Ellie | Re: Gifted Kid? | | You got all confused. Keeping kids in school apart from real world/ world of adults IS keeping them in a bubble. School by no means gives them survival skills; while we will make sure our kids will have survival skills the next generation will need (as even you must have realized by now that our kids’ life will be VERY different from ours). Exposing them to different cool stuff, making them a part of adult life (not just a useless furniture, like kids usually feel in our society). Giving them an opportunity to learn through real life experience instead of an artificial school environment. Having then take responsibility for their own learning. And so on. There is so much more to say, but as I said I don’t really want to argue about it. You can educate your kids the way you want and I couldn’t really care less. That’s my last post on the subject. |

Children: One boy 8, twin girls 7. | Re: Gifted Kid? | | Why would I want them to be part of the "adult" world right now? They are kids and only for a short time. Mine go to school for a few hours and then come home so they get the best of both worlds. You must have really bad schools then if your schools are just furniture. Are you here to bad mouth everything? You have never said anything decent about anyone's parenting. You hate everything outside your community, that is very sad. |

When I was growing up Gifted and Talented was the term for the programs for the 'advanced' kids. Now (at least here) GT refers to an educational theory/plan/attitude that all kids have gifts & talents. And the school should nourish the gifts & talents.
We now call the 'advanced' programs Academically Gifted.
I like the change in terminology. We actually have GT magnet schools and other AG magnet schools.
Just FYI.

At Hannah's school, the Gifted program is for academically gifted. They have enrichment programs for kids that are talented in other ways, but they do not call it gifted, and it is not part of the school day, it is after school.
Their gifted program is REALLy good for academically gifted kids, but I dislike that kids with other talents don't get to be part of it.

  | Re: Gifted Kid? | | Anyone's school district threatening to get rid of the G&T program(s) due to budget issues? Ours is and I'm really frustrated that the program for the advanced kids gets cut w/out a thought yet we spend a ton of money trying to keep up w/ the increasing number of IEPs, aids, resources, etc. to work w/ the SPED population.

Children: Ian, 12, and Ariane, 16 | Re: Gifted Kid? | | We actually had an elementary school principal who said that the gifted kids didn't need more attention at school because they had us (parents) to give them extra attention. Luckily the same school had a great AG teacher.
But there are so many problems with what she said that I don't even want to think about it. I'm sure her attitude is the result of NCLB.
