Children: Ian, 12, and Ariane, 16 | Re: High School Grades | | Here's a suggestion: Does your daughter have an agenda to record assignments? If she doesn't, go buy a datebook with enough space on each day to write down all her assignments. You will need to enlist the help of her teacher(s) for the next step. Ask her teachers to check her agenda at the end of each class to make sure she's recorded all her assignments. Then have the teacher initial it.
Then each night you check the agenda, check your daughter's completed homework, and initial the agenda. This procedure is recommended by teachers at my daughter's school for kids who aren't completing all their homework.
I also talk to my high schooler every day about what she did in each class. We start with first period and progress through the day. Hope this helps. |

One more side note: I am amused by the comments about doing one or two hours of homework. My hi schooler has about six hours a night. (But she's doing some of that to herself because she's in two AP classes as a sophomore.) She's very driven. My son, on the other hand, not so much. |

6 hours? When does hse have time to sleep? My Goodness. IF she gets home at 3 from school, and does nothing but schoolwork, she wouldn't be done till after 9! That's ridiculous. Poor kid |

Children: One boy 8, twin girls 7. | Re: High School Grades | | Bill, if you daughter is a good kid and it's only her grades that are failing then I wouldn't be so hard on her. I hate to admit it but I had all F's in highschool. I have ADD but didn't know it at the time. It took a special way of teaching me for me to actually "get it". I found ways of copying, cheating to get through. Trust me...I tried and tried and tried to get alot of the work but it just didn't make sense. I have a daughter that is just like me and it is very frustrating to teach her. There are so many distractions in highschool and it's really hard to learn. You have people wanting to be social, people who are acting up and taking you away from learning and sometimes the teachers in high schools just don't have the time to do one on one teaching. A tutor is an excellant idea, a paper home with assignments is also an excellant idea. High school may still be tough for her though. I had all excellant grades until 9th I ended up leaving in my second year of 11th grade and took my GED. I went on to a vocational school where I spent three years and was on the B honor roll (different and calm atmosphere) I also went to college where I was on the B honor roll. I am now a teacher! Your daughter is probably VERY smart. Go and sit in a highschool classroom and see how it is. You'll be amazed how distracting it is. Go to different classes as well and look at the difference in teachers teaching. Peek in when they are not looking and you will see the teachers laxed (some not all) Try and understand where she is coming from. She may be too proud and not want to let you down. She just may not be getting it. |

  | Re: High School Grades | | I suggest sitting down and making up a schedule/plan for the week. First schedule in any recurring assignments. For instance, if she has a vocab quiz every Fri then Thurs night should include focusing primarily on vocab/English.
Include 15-20 min of active homework or review (if there is no assigned homework) per academic subject. Assuming she has 5 academic classes, this will be a mandatory hour and 15-40 min. Then let her take a break. Spend an hour or so decompressing and enjoying being a kid.
Then she comes back each night and spends a 1/2 an hour or so on ONE particular academic subject to review, catch up, rewrite/type notes, reread the text, record her notes into an audio (.mp3) file on her computer, etc. For ex. Sun night she could focus on math, Mon night the focus would be on science, etc.
This way she will visit each subject every night, get all of the mandatory work & studying done, and then know that there will be a special time set aside during the week where she can really focus on just one subject instead of being overwhelmed by everything piling up.
AND, as a teacher and a tutor involved in an online tutoring program I must echo what was mentioned earlier about getting a personal tutor for your daughter. You may just need to get her working w/ someone for a few months until she internalizes how to study and understand her own learning styles. You can wean her off of a tutor once she starts to feel like she can handle the material on a consistent basis. We see this all the time!
Good luck! |

Get an agenda or a day planner for your child to record homework.
Have the teacher initial the agenda each day to show that the homework is recorded. Then you initial it every night to show that you have checked that the homework is done.
This way your child can never bamboozle you and say that they have no homework! |

  | Re: High School Grades | | I've mentioned this before on other threads w/ regards to the previous suggestion by aliinnc - just make sure that they write the HW down in PEN b/c I've caught a few kids writing stuff down in pencil, I (the classroom teacher) would sign it to make sure it is written correctly and completely, and then they erase what they have written, rewrite something they already did in class, show mom and dad - they think its done, they initial it, and they bring it back in w/ out the HW done. Kids can put a lot of effort into something if they want. If they would only put in the same amount of effort on their actual HW!!! |

Children: 2 boys (6 and 2) | Re: High School Grades | | I probably would not punish her if she is a good kid. Something has to be going on. A good kid doesn't just fluff off so badly they nearly flunk everything. I think with minimal effort one could probably pull off better grades than that. Are the classes too difficult? Are they too easy? Are the grades way out of character? Are they typical? And I cant believe that at this point she can't remember some of the homework assignments. I would be completely shocked and freaked out by grades like that. I would think there was something seriously wrong and I would want to get to the bottom of it. |
