 | High School Grades | | Hello,
Our daughter is 15 and currently has 3 F's and 1 D. I am in high contact with the teachers through email as far as what is due and missing and when tests are coming up. She is a very sweet and nice kid and not into any trouble scene, she is just very hard to motivate. When she gets a good grade she is always excited to show us and keeps saying she likes to get good grades. We always aske her if she needs help. As discipline we have grounded her until she can pull the grades up. I am at a loss at what else to do, if anything. I have read here and in other sites that sometimes "natural" consequences are the best. For example, she will fail, stay back, run the risk of not graduating with her friends, etc... Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Children: Nichole | Re: High School Grades | | does she not do the work or is she doing it and failing? If she is not doing it, then I would say someone needs to make sure she does, if both parents work then I would sugest a tutor program like Slyvan that will keep her on top of it, well actually either way I would suggest getting a tutor to either help her do it or to make sure she does do it. Set homework times are good for kids who just don't seem to do it. I know at my house homework time was from 7-8 every night except Friday and Sat. If we had bad grades, c's or worse then we had an hour and a half to two hours. No radio, no tv, just quiet studying. If no homework, find something else to study. |

 | Re: High School Grades | | The classes are in all subjects, Math, History, English and Science. Set study time is a good idea as well as a tutor. We do try to make sure the homework is done but sometimes it is difficult to "baby sit" all the time. For example she will simply say "I dont have any..or I did it at school". Being in contact with the teachers helps this sometimes because the teachers will specifically say she has "questions due..". This way when our daughter says "I dont have homework, we can show her the email from the teacher. As you can imagine, that is very challenging to do for 4 classes. Getting a set homework assignment list from the teachers doesnt always work because they change from time to time. |

Children: Nichole | Re: High School Grades | | yay I thats hard to do with older kids, when they have one teacher it can still be hard. I would definately say set homework times, that way no matter what she says she has or doesn't have, she still has to sit there and do school work. If she doesn't have any homework then she can read over her history text book or whatever. |

Children: One boy, Bradley | Re: High School Grades | | I would also agree with Hannah's Mom - get a tutor. It's amazing how well a kid can learn one-on-one vs. the class setting. A tutor will go over it until she gets it, while a teacher will go over it and just move on to the next subject. Also read a couple of books on how to study...learn what techniques work best for your kid.
Make the tutoring sessions mandatory also...no option to skip, so she has no alternative but to learn the lessons.
I don't think removing TV priviliges is going to change her study habits at all. She will just distract herself with something else. She needs to learn to like studying and how to streamline it. |

 | Re: High School Grades | | A tutor makes alot of sense. I think the school will offer something like this. |
