I will not home school because I don't think I could teach her all she needs to know, but I will do my best to get her in a Charter school. |

Children: Xander is 4, McKenzie is 3 months! | Re: Homeschool | | If you are interested in homeschooling, I would HIGHLY recommend you look up the works on John Taylor Gatto. He is a NYC school teacher, and he exposes the inner workings of our school system, and how messed up it really is. I have the book "dumbing us down," which is a collection of five of his speeches. It is really good stuff, and I will for sure never send any future kids of mine to public schools. As a kid growing up, I hated being in school, and being constantly punished for studying/reading my own stuff, and refusing to put up with the junk they try and teach you. Public School=Brainwashing.

Children: Nichole | Re: Homeschool | | I agree that the schools systems are nto always ideal. But it does depend on the system in your area as well. We have a "good" school distrrict compared to many. Now I think she could recieve a better eduacation in a charter program though. |

Children: Isabella (9), Josephine (8), Hannah (5), and Natalia (7 months) | Re: Homeschool | | See we got in a huge fight with the district here. I get a little mommabear when my kids are messed with. I didn't like the education my kids were getting like I said. Isabella was the one being messed with by the district which is a long story. Anyhow they tried to fight me pulling her out to homeschool her because with her hearing she was classified as needed special education. Never mind that her own teacher said she was ready to mainstream. So I enlisted some teacher friends of mine and they helped me find the right program and now all of my kids are beyond what their old district is teaching. Then again California's educational system is 49th in the nation I believe.
On top of that schools out in my old California town just are not safe. One kid was kidnapped in front of one school and a high schooler came on campus and raped a 4th grader at another school. Both of those incidents happened this year. In Oregon, where I live now, if my kids were in high school they would go to Thurston High School. In 1998 Kip Kinkel killed his parents and then went on a shooting spree at Thurston High School. Natalia was born in the same hospital where one of his victims died. These things scare me.

Thx | Personally, I feel that the public school system, or ANY school system for that matter is a way for certain people to try to control other people, by dictating to them what they should learn. This is not how human beings work-Children are born with an innate desire to learn, and if they are motivated and provided with a learning positive environment, they will learn on their own. Children should be able to choose what they want to learn, and allowed to do their own thing, and be responsible for their own education. One study showed that it takes an average of 100 hours for children to learn reading, writing, and math in their entirety. That is less than a months worth of traditional school! In the 12 years of school most children are subjected to, many don't even have these basic skills upon graduation! Beyond all the crap that is crammed into these kids mind during those 12 years, they are punished for doing their own thing, and going outside the sacred "curriculum." I was never encouraged to read about flying or things I wanted to read- I was punished with bad grades. That is one more thing that pisses me off about schools- the fact that they grade children like pieces of meat from a grinder. Children should learn what they want, when they want, and be happy within themselves for it. The idea of institutionalized school is just wrong, IMHO.
