In kindergarten they really only teach sight words not sounding things out as much. Just wanted to add that.

Kaytee, actually a Kindergarten curriculum can vary a great deal from district to district or from private school to school. Before kids I taught Kindergarten in a private Catholic school. We taught phonetics and sight words, as well as a whole language approach.

mere12877, sorry, I thought she was in 1st Grade. Since she has yet to start Gr. 1 I wouldn't be too concerned at this point. It's not unusual at this stage for kids not to be able to read well. To echo Melissa, if you push the issue now you could possibly turn your DD off to reading all together, which would not be a good thing! Read, read, READ to her and with her at home. Point out and read letters, numbers and signs when you're out and about. She will eventually catch on. As I mentioned in my earlier post, all kids are different. Not all kids are reading by the end of Kindergarten.

Perhaps try putting a sticker (red dot sticker) on the spine of each book your daughter reads (only if you own them of course) - this will give her a sense of acheivement as she will want to read and complete all her books to be able to put a sticker on each. My mum did this with my sister and I when we were younger and each night we would want to add at least one more sticker to a book. Let her start with the really east ones first so she gets into the flow of it and gets a feeling of success.

Have you considered that she might have a vision problem? You might want to rule that issue out before getting too keyed up about it.

lol...wow...

I think it should rest on the parents shoulders in the first place. Learning to read is an everyday practice ritual that doesn't just come naturally. You really think a school with one teacher...or even 2...could give the proper time and one-on-one attention it takes to teach a kid to read?

That is commitment to good parenting!

Stop letting your kid play so much, and start spending time with her reading. Who cares if she doesn't want to...of course she won't...she's no good at it! Your job is to make her good...and if that means taking away privliges until she learns...then that's what ya gotta do.

Find ways to make it fun...find some good learning activity books, etc...but it is YOUR job to educate your kid on the fundamentals...not a school's.

Scott

PS - d's and b's are easily confused in the beginning stages of reading/writing. Don't worry about that...it's normal.

I teach kindergarten and I have learned that every child will not have the same interests, but in fact it is important for every child to learn to read. I feel that children are most successful at reading if they are given the opportunity to self-select books. This allows them to choose books on topics they enjoy. It also allows them to choose books at different levels and learn a little on their own what is too easy and what is too hard for them. I highly recommend reading to and with books that have lots of rhyme (Dr. Seuss) and rythm or repetition (Eric Carle). The brain loves patterns and it is okay for a child to hear or read the same book over and over again. This begins to familiarize them with rythyms and patterns in reading. I wouldn't worry about the b's and d's unless it continues past 1st grade. Some of my top students were reading chapter books and writing paragraphs, but still mixing up their b's and d's. I hope this all helps!

I think I was like 10 before I stopped making mistakes with b's and d's. I am slightly dyslectic, but not to a point that I ever had problems in school. Now when I was younger I would write my name in the top of my page at school. It had a "b" in it, then I would know what the b looked like. It helped me so much. I would suggest doing something similar. Like just a simple word like bed, now if you can get teh child to remember how the word bed looks, they can just write the word and use that help them.

Wink Re: My 6 year old doesnt like reading

Hi everyone,

this is my first post.

i saw this thread so i'm kind of interested cos I'm like the 6 yr old girl. I dont like reading when i was young too! the only book which i finished reading on my own and read it many times is the book: Cinderalla! I know it's such a shameful thing to admit. i guess i only read that book then when i was about 6-8 yrs old as i felt that i was like Cinderalla haha the "forced to do housework" section.

i was made to wipe dry dishes after meals. i simply didnt like it then. all right enough said. though i didnt like to read back then in schools, we were forced to read! I really hated the book reviews chores as part of holiday assignment but one thing kept me going, i remember we could get some badges like Bronze Reader if you finish 30 books etc... this was the only thing that kept me going...

at that time, i prefer to be read stories. it's such enjoyable time! I remember my school teacher read us Ronald Dahl " The Witches" it was real good. the whole class kept so quiet.

You know something, I CHANGED from then. I took the initative to borrow my first book from the library. It was Ronald Dahl " BFG" the rest is history

from a kid's point of view, if they dont like to read on their own, then start off with reading them short stories... it might create the MAGIC

Cheers!

I agree, most experts say that just having books in the house and reading to your child(ren) will instill in kids some for of the love of reading. Whether that be reading themselves or even being read to.

I would suggest reading then giving her an award to reading.
