Default Something I saw on the news

Ok so I was watching the news and a school district in my area is proposing a 4 day week for school. Fridays off. The elementary kids would go from 7:40-4:45, highschool from 8:45-5:30. Is it just me or is that just insane? I am exhausted after working an 8 hour day, let alone expect an 8 year old to actaully learn anything! Then I think of kids with after school programs. So this 15 year old gets out at 5:30, has band practice till 7, gets home at 7:30, eats dinner at 8!!! Then has to do homework from 9-11, then go to bed, only to get up at 6:30. ummm thats crazyiness!! What about the kids who work? I worked about 2-25 hours a week in high school. These kids will not get any sleep or they will never have a day off. I just don't get it. My husband is just kinda like well... maybe it would work.
What do you all think

I think it's the stupidest idea in the world. I can't see how teachers would be very happy with it either, even if it DID give them a three-day weekend. I don't think the trade-off would be worth it.

I'd have to read the full article to understand why they think it is a good idea.

The one problem I see is that a majority of parents work 5 days a week M-F, which would mean they would have to figure out what they would do with their school age kids every Friday. For most this would mean $$$ per child. This reason alone would cause a majority of parents to reject the idea.

According to the district it will save them money. Less money to heat or cool the building, things like that. I f orget the actaul dollar amount but it was like 3 mil. Now I cna't say if that is per year or what. They had a meeting about it yesterday with parents and teachers. Most do not want this passed. The superintendent is going to Austin soon to advocate this. The teachers are really ticked off that they heard nothing about this till 30 days before school starts.

I don't like the idea. I think the 8-3 is good for students. Why change it?

I think a all year long school with shorter days would be even better, but this is just ridiculous in my opinion.

If they can't come up with better reason than that, I'd be surprised if the parents let it happen. It would cause too much disruption in people's lives, and in a way it is passing the cost to the parents. It might save the school disstrict 3 million, but in turn cause the parent to spend 5%-10% more of their monthly income to adjust for daycare or activities to keep their kids busy on Friday.

That is a crazy idea!! Here, kids are in school at primary level from 9-3:30 and that seems more than enough time for them, no way would I allow my children to be in school for that long

Abbi will become famous soon enough

Default Re: Something I saw on the news

Wasn't there something a few years ago that the average 6 or so hours that the kids do now is actually too long for them? I'm not sure on this but it was bought up by a woman I used to work with.

I barebly wanted to do those kind of hours when I was working, let alone at school.
