I like the emphasis on working hard. I have a sister who was always told how smart she was, and she later backed down from challenges. In fact, even though she was fourth in her high school class, she ended up with an associate degree instead of a 4-year degree. That's fine if it was because she just loved the field she was in so much and didn't need a 4-year, but that's not the case.
Her son has a near-genius I.Q. He's also been told frequently how smart he is. He has a four year degree from a prestigious college. He received that degree two years ago...and is still not working.
Emphasizing hard work, which is in the control of the child, makes such perfect sense.
For my daughter, she wants to be an established singer before reaching college age, but she knows that if that doesn't happen she'll be going to college. She knows it will take hard work. She knows the competition is fierce, and that without persistance, she might as well give it up. She has talent, but an awful lot of talented singers aren't able to make a living at it.
Hard work and persistence....thanks for the post. |

Not because it's prestigious, but just because of the experience. Having attended Tulane, Harvard, and Penn it's just a completely different kind of college experience and the only way to get there is by taking AP courses (among other things of course). |

Being a finance major now, it's a little gross looking at how easily the money grows when you start early - my parents weren't able to help either my sister or me as far as college goes - luckily we live in Georgia, and with my GPA I qualified for the HOPE scholarship, but I really want my daughter to be able to go to college even if she isn't a whiz in high school.

I don't think he became a serious student until his junior year. The first two he mostly studied the Art of the Kegstand if I go by what he tells me. |

Children: Nichole | Re: When to back off the high achievement path | | we do not. We are a paycheck to pay check kinda family. ITs not ideal at all and I wish I would be able to help her. No one helped me though. My DH's parents paid for him. I will do my best to pay as much as I can for college. Maybe a reimbursement kinda thing. If she makes A's and B's we will refund her 100% of her tuition for the semester, c's maybe 50% of tuition, and obviously if D's and F's then no money back. May also help her ot be more serious about schoiol |

Children: Savannah and Hunter | Re: When to back off the high achievement path | | Kaytee, doesn't she get aid if she finishes in the top 10% of her class? Or is it just assured admission to the University of Texas system?
Texas is the richest public university. Also, Baylor, Rice, and Southern Methodist give excellent scholarships. |
