Default Child Obesity, reversing the trend

2/3 of Americans are overweight and 1/3 of those are obese. The rising generation has even scarier statistics awaiting them.

Already, 1/4 of American children have high blood pressure and many are beginning to show signs of type 2 diabetes. This was UNHEARD OF a generation ago. We are to blame for this epidemic, but surprisingly, the government is also. There was a short expose done on Nightline by Peter Jennings that explains the connection and it is shocking, it is entitled How to Get Fat Without Really Trying, (it is not the initial one that starts, its the second one in the list) click here to watch.

Diet is the key to fixing this problem. It really doesnt matter how much exercise our children do, it cannot make up for a lack of nutrition. Our bodies were not designed to ingest and digest all the chemicals and altered foods, i.e. white flour, corn syrup, artificial flavors, colors and preservatives, that makes up the majority of the average diet. It also cannot pull a rabbit out of a hat, it can't absorb and use those necessary vitamins if they're not there.

We need to make a change as responsible adults in what we buy for our children and in what we eat ourselves. When the Grocery stores begin to see that healthy foods are selling more, they will start demanding a higher quality of foodstuff from their suppliers, who will in turn create a higher quality of food.

So what kind of foods should we eat and where can we find it, and how much extra will it cost. Believe it or not switching to a healthy diet and dropping those things which are unhealthy will not cost any extra. When we change from the fluffy cheesy puffs and starchy white pastas, to a diet of nutrient rich whole foods, our bodies are satisfied with less volume and will feel more energy and vitality than we ever imagined. It is also shown that overweight people on a whole food diet lose a pound a day or more without going hungry.
To read a definition of whole foods click here
To read an article on whole foods click here

you can purchase whole foods from health stores however it is generally cheaper from the web at this point in time they also give a larger selection. One website that I use is Whole Food Pharmacy. You can also google whole foods and find many different options.

These are things which i have discovered please post your thoughts about kids and obesity and helping them

We grow a garden every summer. Tomatoes, Corn, and a few other vegetables. Doesn't solve the world's problems, but every little bit helps.

So what do you think of ADM?

A few years ago we had a garden, now we have no yard to provide for this. However there are other methods to get good foods, and your right every little bit helps, if everyone tried to make similar changes in diet we would have totally different foods in our grocery stores than we see today.

No one in my family is obese. We eat healthily and shop at regular stores. The key is to cut out (or limit) junk foods, soda and processed foods, etc. and to buy whole wheat pasta and breads.

My wife likes to shop at the local farmers market so we get other vegetable that realistically can't grow ourselves. One thing for sure, we can taste the difference. Tomatoes are my favorite!!

Kids becoming overweight is increasing problem because of processed foods and other junk food.

I agree - it is the processed foods and junk foods.

We also shop at the farmer's market - helps out local farmers, and the food is always fresh.

My pediatrician also recommended NO juice - and only 2 cups of milk a day. He said the majority of her fluid should be water. I will give her juice occasionally now, but never made it a habit when she was little.

Also, I found it helpful to not ever fight with Hannah about food. I always gave her good, healthy choices to choose from. She would eat when she was hungry, and she woud eat only what she liked. This way, food was never a power struggle.

Now, Hannah makes great choices with food. She eats things that I never thought a 5 year old would!

The processed foods are just hard for our bodies to break down and use even if they are "enriched with vitamins and minerals."
A lot of the things that your body cant process or doesnt know what to do with gets turned to fat.

We aqlso try to eat healthy, well I don't lol but my daughter does. I eat the good stuff at night. lol She does get processed foods and well... unfortuantely you don't always have a choice. We try not to often though and don't let her get fast food except the rare occassion.

The problem is, is that most (not all) of obese amwericans are lower income. They can't afford to buy good food. They have to buy Tuna Halper for dinner because it cost 3 bucks to feed a family a four, whereas a good healthy meal costs a lot more. Whose fault is that?
