Default Diabetes and children

Diabetes is a growing problem in the US as well as other countries and recent studies have shown that children are beginning to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Here is an interesting article about one of the causes of diabetes and thus a way to prevent it.

"In our society diabetes is caused by primarily by ingesting high levels of un-natural processed sugars such as white table sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. These types of sugars (simple carbohydrates) are much smaller, on the molecular level, and therefore cross the blood-brain barrier extremely fast. The brain interprets this enormous rush of sugar as trauma and instantly signals the pancreas to over-produce insulin to lower the blood sugar levels. The body was not designed to ingest these un-natural types of sugars and attempts to combat them by producing insulin. This constant stimulation of the pancreas, over time, simply causes it to wear out – the medical community calls this condition type 2 diabetes. In one sense, un-natural sugars wear out the pancreas just like cigarettes wear out the lungs.

Natural sugars, like the sugars found in fruits, are known as complex carbohydrates. The body was designed to ingest them. They are much larger molecules and cross the blood brain barrier very slowly. They cause the brain to signal the pancreas to produce glucagons which create a feeling of energy and well being."

It isnt necessary that we eliminate all unnatural sugar from our diets. However we should be careful, Pop, unnatural juices, candy, etc would be a good idea to diminish, not just for our children but for us also.

I see your point. Another way to help slow down childhood diabetes is to breastfeed. Studies show that children who are nursed for the first year of life have much less risk of getting diabetes.

We don't avoid sugar all together, but I think we have been moderately successful at keeping it down. We buy almost no candy. And personally I avoid sugar during the work day because it makes me feel tired. Thankfully our daughter doesn't have a sweet tooth and naturally doesn't eat to much junk. It help that there is very little in the house!

This is really bugging me.

Of course this and other diseases are on the rise and it has little to do with diet in many cases.

Diabetes has a heavy genetic factor! When there were no treatments for diabetes, most died from its effects before they could pass the genes on to their offspring. Over the years, treatments have allowed diabetics and those who carry the genes to live longer and have more children. It is only logical to see a rise in the disease!!!!!!!!!!!

Diet is way down the list of reasons, but it is what "the powers that be" are throwing at us. Why do you think that is?

Diet is important, but their are other ways to lower your risk as well.

Genetics trumps diet every time. That is why we see the rise even in places that never heard of Mcdonalds.
