Children: 2 children, Debra Lyn, and Logan (Bubba) Michael. Due in July with #3 | to give or not to give | | Ok so I had to take DD to the dr this morning, she had been complaining about pain in her ear. I knew she had an ear infection and since they usually clear up on their own I wasn't in any hurry, but she kept asking me to take her to the dr so after 2 days I had to go plus I wanted to make sure I was right. So she does infact have an ear infection and they send me home with yet another rx for amoxicillin. I think this is way over rx and it seems to me that no matter what we always leave with it, so he wants to see her back in 10 days and I'm thinking I should just hold off giving it to her. What do you think? |

Children: Nichole | Re: to give or not to give | | Personally I would give her tylonal to make her comfy, they also have those ear drops that help with pain and discomfort. Then I would give it like 4 or 5 more days. If it does not go away on its own, then I would give the meds. That is just me.
If you are having doubts about the drug, don't give it. i would sugest finding a doc that you feel more comfy with. |

Due in July with #3 | Re: to give or not to give | | About the Dr., this is second one we've been to now, her first Dr did the same thing, I had been looking into changing when her "father" lost his job and so she had to get Medicaid, they didn't take it so I went to another who was highly recommended (as far as our options) and we had been seeing eye to eye on a lot of things. DH can't insure her right now so we are stuck with for now. Tylenol is what I had been giving her. The biggest problem is that every time she sniffles my mom gets on me to take her in, and she hears that. It's easy to ignore my mom but when dd is after me all the time going "Did you call the Dr yet" or "why haven't you made me an appointment" I start to feel bad. I really think it unnecessary though |

 | Re: to give or not to give | | I think you should discuss with the doctor the pro's ad con's of giving the antibiotics and what the recent research suggests. I know there is a move towards less antibiotic treatment for ear infections. I am sure if your doctor is approachable he/she would not mind discussing it with you. You would then be in a position to make a more informed decision. http://www.mariasorganicbabies.com |

 | Re: to give or not to give | | I hate to tell you not to give them to her but I would go a couple of days and see what happens. I would definently change dr's though. I am surprised that the dr is constantly giving out antibotics only because my son's ped. is the exact opposite in that if he thinks it is viral he will have me wait a couple of days and see if it goes away on it's own and if it doesn't then he will prescribe antibotics. Now if he thinks it is bacterial he will automatically give him medicine to treat the infection. |

Children: Nichole | Re: to give or not to give | | our doc does that as well. Nichole has never been sick but our friends go to the same doc with their toddler. And their daughter has had MANY MANY ear infections including now getting tubes put in. Her way of doing it is, she will give a prescription to them but tell them to give it x amount of days, if it doesn't seem to be getting better to start the antibiotics. Then they always follow up with a phone call |

| Re: to give or not to give | | Doctors give antibiotics because it's easier than trying to figure out a "cause" - easier to treat the symptoms. I think if doctors figured out WHY children got things like ear infections, they'd probably be able to cut down on some of them. But, then, they'd also be having less appointments for things that parents could deal with. |

Children: Nichole | Re: to give or not to give | | it has a lot to do with parents as well.
Parents think they NEED to give their children meds to make them better. Therefore docs do it to apease certain parents as well |
