Children: A one year old boy, Eli.
Question Mac And Cheese?!

I've been trying to get Eli to eat more real food lately, he's ten months old, and I made Kraft Macaroni and cheese spirals. I put them on his high chair tray and he picked up and ate a pretty good portion of it. Almost immediately after I took him out, I noticed he had a rash that looked to me like hives (I get them myself) all up his side and kind of on his back and tummy. A few were on his face around his mouth too.

What does this mean? That's never happened with him before. Does that mean he's allergic to something in it? What would it be?

He usually eats jarred baby food but sometimes he sits down for dinner with us whatever we're eating if I feel it's healthy enough for him, and besides that he drinks Similac Isomil Advanced in his bottle. That's soy formula.

This ever happened to anybody else? Any ideas? I'm confused. He's fine now though, they went away completely after a couple hours. Help?

It does sound like it might be a reaction to the food. You mentioned soy formula. Is he allergic to milk? Because cheese is considered a dairy product and it could be what caused it. Although how real is the cheese in mac and cheese?

Did he have any other side effects, such as potty problems or stomach aches? My first thought would be a dairy allergy as well.

I don't know... he was extremely colicky (sp?!) as a newborn, and when I stopped breast feeding, I had to try different formulas until he seemed okay. He didn't have a rash on the milk based stuff though, just was colicky. I switched from that to Isomil (the soy) and he was still colicky and spitting up, so I switched him to this stuff called Nutramigen Lipil by Enfamil, and he was like a whole new baby it was great for him. At like 7 months I think the doctor suggested I try to put him back on the soy or milk based formula since he was older now and his digestive system had developed more. I chose the Isomil since I figured it would be more gentle to switch over to. He drinks gerber yogurt juice sometimes... I don't know if there's milk in that or not.

I really don't know.

There was definitely milk in the mac and cheese, you have to mix milk into it at the end with butter too.

How could I tell?

It could be either an allergy to the milk, or to a preservative, you mentioned it was Kraft brand.

Easiest way to pinpoint the allergy is to have a food allergy test done, its done via a fingerprick and it tests for the 96 most common food allergens. Only problem is that its quite pricey.

Are you sure? My little sister got tested for allergies when she was little because she had food problems, and the memory of it horrifies her because they had to stick her with needles all up her legs or something like that.

If it's just a fingerprick...well I could do that. I have insurance, hopefully it would be covered maybe.

Or give him mac and cheese again. As long as he only had a skin reaction I would wait a week or so and then try it again. Could be a flook. I rather try mac and cheese again then have my baby poked.

I do everything I can before ever bringing my baby to the hospital because I can't stand how they heartlessly and thoughtlessly poke the crap out of babies to do tests. I mean I want to find out whats wrong, but holy crap.

And I told myself that if I ever HAVE to take him to the hospital then I will absolutely refuse to let them do any slightly uncomfortable thing to him unless it is pretty much like life depending or incredibly important.

I've had a bad experience.

You know what else? I could just try putting some milk in his cup and have him drink that, see what happens. It can't be cheese, cause he's eaten cheese puffs a billion times. I could... give him a piece of bread with butter on it (which sounds kind of unhealthy, but just to test the allergy). I know it's not the noodles, he's eaten plenty of pasta. If none of those things do anything, and I try the mac and cheese again, it must just be some random thing they put in the powder cheese mix??? Funky.

You could try putting some milk in a cup and have him drink it, but be careful. Only give just a little, because if it's a severe allergy, you could do more harm than good.

Good luck with that little guy!
