 | School lunches can be healthy! | | School lunches have improved over the last few years. Not only do they taste better, they are more nutritious. Many school lunches meet the standards for protein, vitamins, calcium, and iron; yet, they still exceed recommendations for fat. In most cafeterias, a child can still choose an unhealthy combination from the a la carte menu or by using the vending machines. As a parent, you can use school lunches as a way to teach your child about healthy foods and the advantages of eating healthy............. read more at my new blog parentoday.com

| Re: School lunches can be healthy! | | In highschool I gained 20 pounds because of the food I ate. I would skip breakfast. Eat the crap lunch my school had. Then go home and eat large portions of dinner. Boy do I regret it. At lease I lost 15 pounds so far but it is good to hear schools are taking care of the food they serve lol. |

| Re: School lunches can be healthy! | | I'm sure they're trying, but there are still more things that can be done. At the school my kids would go to, they have hamburgers available EVERY day, and then have things like pizza at least once a week. Not that pizza and hamburgers are bad, but there are more nutritious things they could choose to serve. |

Healthier doesn't exactly mean healthy if ya know what I mean |

| Re: School lunches can be healthy! | | There was a really good podcast at http://www.familyfoodnetwork.com This is a new podcast (only about 9 weeks old) and they had a program today about school lunches and what you can do to make them healthier, especially if you fix lunches for your child to take to school. If you get a chance, stop by. They also have links to other places and usually have a recipe or two on the page, as well. |

 | Re: School lunches can be healthy! | | I'd like them to cut out more fried foods and even Gatorade has lots of sugar. I've told my boys not to purchase it. |
