That said, I would think 50-60% are circumsized in the US.

In summary, UTIs are relatively common infections among uncircumcised male infants, a group who are at least 10- to 12-fold more likely to develop these infections compared with their circumcised counterparts. UTIs can cause substantial acute and long-term morbidity.

When is Adult Circumcision Necessary?
Adult circumcision is not uncommon, though it's also not something a doctor will advise unless a man is experiencing certain health problems, such as balanoposthitis, inflammation of the head of the penis and overlying foreskin, or phimosis, difficulty retracting the foreskin. Both problems are seen more commonly in diabetics, but can occur in any uncircumcised man. They are caused by chronic irritation and scarring and can usually be prevented with careful cleaning beneath the foreskin.
In addition to balanoposthitis and phimosis, several other conditions can prompt a man to become circumcised:
1. Paraphimosis is the inability to position the foreskin back over the head of the penis after it has been retracted; this is usually associated with phimosis and can be a surgical emergency since blood flow to the head of the penis can become impaired.
2. Genital warts (condylomata) can become quite large and unresponsive to topical medications, and if located on the foreskin, may be best treated with circumcision.
3. Penile cancer, if caught early enough, may be treated with circumcision (interestingly, penile cancer virtually never occurs in circumcised men).

Undergoing a circumcision as an adult can be intimidating, but it is generally safe. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, but it can also be performed under local. Healing can potentially be complicated by nocturnal erections, which put pressure on the incision and can cause bleeding (this is usually self-limiting, but can create swelling and bruising). Diabetics have a greater risk of postoperative infection, which is generally a low risk after this surgery.

| Re: why you SHOULD circumcise | | Balanoposthitis Quote:
Swelling and redness of the foreskin and head of the penis occurs. There may be purulent discharge. Severe swelling may produce problems in those with an intact foreskin where it is difficult for the penis to extend through the foreskin. Severe infection with some spirochetes can lead to ulceration and necrosis of the penis and foreskin. Ulceration and white curd like deposits may occur with fungal infections.

| Re: why you SHOULD circumcise | | Phimosis Quote: Definition of Phimosis Phimosis is tightness of the prepuce (foreskin) of the penis that prevents the retraction of the foreskin over the glans. The condition is usually congenital but it may be the result of an infection. Description of Phimosis True phimosis - that is, not just non-retractability - may rarely be a primary and congenital anomaly, but is much more commonly secondary to repeated attacks of infection that cause scarring and narrowing of the preputial ring.
Difficulty with voiding and ballooning of the prepuce are the commonest reasons for patients seeking treatment, though recurrent bacterial infections (balano-posthitis) may also occur. Phimosis begins with an infection of the foreskin. If untreated, the infection spreads and the foreskin swells up. Eventually, the foreskin becomes so large that it cannot retract. It is swollen and tight, and cannot be moved back away from the glans.
Phimosis is the result of repeated foreskin infections such as balanitis. It is linked to neglected hygiene. Germs breed under the foreskin with its enclosed glans. The delicate tissues undergo a process of partial healing/partial flare-up/partial healing again. Scar tissue keeps building up and breaking down. Eventually, the scar tissue becomes fibrous - hard, tough and inelastic. It contracts the meatus, pulling the infected foreskin tightly inwards. At the same time, nearby healthy tissue strives to form new scabs and becomes infected. This adds to the spread of germs. | GRAPHIC PICTURE: http://hinyoukika.cocolog-nifty.com/...s/gangren1.jpg

Circumcision - Topic Overview
| Quote: What is circumcision?
Male circumcision is an elective surgery to remove the foreskin (prepuce), a fold of skin that covers and protects the rounded tip of the penis (glans). This surgery is most commonly done on newborns about 24 hours old. See an illustration of the penis before and after circumcision .
If a baby is born early (premature) or has certain medical conditions, he may be circumcised when he is somewhat older. Circumcision may also be done in older boys and men to treat problems with the foreskin of the penis (such as phimosis and paraphimosis) or for inflammation of the tip of the penis (balanitis).
This topic focuses on the circumcision of newborns.
In 1999, about 65% of all male babies born in hospitals in the United States were circumcised.1 But this rate varies depending on where you live. In some parts of the United States about half of all males are circumcised, while other parts of the country have higher circumcision rates. Who performs circumcisions?
Circumcisions usually are done by a pediatrician, obstetrician, family medicine doctor, surgeon, or urologist. However, ritual circumcision may be done by others trained in the procedure, such as mohels of the Jewish faith. Should I have my son circumcised?
Circumcision is not medically necessary. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend circumcision as a routine procedure for newborn males. When making this policy, the AAP considered the possible health benefits of circumcision, such as a lower risk for urinary tract infections (UTIs) in the first year of life. The AAP also considered the risks and costs of the procedure when making this policy.2
When you make this decision, it may help you to think about your personal and cultural preferences. For example, you may want to consider your family and religious traditions while you weigh the benefits and risks of the surgery. It is your decision whether to have your son circumcised. What problems can develop if my son is circumcised?
Problems from circumcision are rare. If they occur, they are usually minor. The most common circumcision problems are pain, bleeding, infection of the circumcision site and at the opening of the urethra, and irritation of the exposed tip of the penis. Long-term problems are even rarer but can include damage to the opening of the urethra, excessive bleeding that requires stitches, severe infection, or scarring and other problems from surgical error. |
