I wikipedia'd it, and im not really sure. I might have to go see it to judge it-but just a warning, be careful if you were planning on taking the little ones to this one. According to the internet, they took a lot of the anti-God stuff out of the movie so it sells, but its still there in the books. |
Well, it could be used as a learning experience. You have to make your mind about things on your own without others people's input so I don't think seeing the movie will change your beliefs. If you have strong enough beliefs then you have nothing to worry about. |

Children: One boy, Bradley | Re: The Golden Compass | | If anything, all the outrage over this will make it even more successful. Controversy leads to increased ticket sales.
I hadn't even heard about any of this Christian stuff until today. I wiki'd it too, and the story just seems like a fantasy story. A few other sites talk about how awful it is to theology...but I'm just more intrigued. |

Children: Jamie (5) | Re: The Golden Compass | | My views on this are: if you're afraid a simple film or book will destroy your child's faith, then that faith must not have been very strong to begin with.
As for me, I'm a believer and I love Philip Pullman's work regardless. It doesn't make me question my faith. I plan to take Jamie to see the film. I think it's important for children to be exposed to different views, so they'll be able to reflect on them and draw their own conclusions.
I also agree with Fooser. Controversy, public outcries and attempts for censorship will only draw more attention to the film and books.

Since you've read the book, can you answer this...
Is there a clear anti-god message in them? Or is it just another example of the religious community freaking out over nothing? |

The His Dark Materials series has been described as " The chronicles of Narnia for atheists". I think that's an exaggeration. The outrage is because some people say the books insult Christianity and God. From what I perceived when I read the books, what Philip Pullman attacks are the bad aspects of institucionalised religion in general (be it Christianity, Islam, Judaism, etc.) and not Christianity itself.
In conclusion, I think people are blowing the issue way out of proportion.

As far as I know, no one is freaking out here.

Why would you even read his books in the first place if you are so against him? | mainly because I am strong in my beliefs does not mean that i think that young children are. They are impressionable, little sponges. I am not anti- everything but Christianity, nor do I think athiest in general are evil, but I do feel I need to protect my child from people who are anti-God. Does that make sense? It's like I have no problem with my daughter is exposed toother religions. Judaism, islamic or even people who are true athiest, but most of them are not going to basically "kill God"
As far as me reading them, I want to see what the hype is about. Is it anti'christian like Narnia is Christian. Because I would have never known it was Christian if not told. |

Children: Isabella (9), Josephine (8), Hannah (5), and Natalia (7 months) | Re: The Golden Compass | | But a true Athiest would not try to kill God because to an Athiest there is no God to be killed. I probably won't see the movie because I am not all that into Sci-Fi. I don't think a movie could sway my faith or that of my children.
