Children: Xander is 4, McKenzie is 3 months! | The Golden Compass | | At first this movie looked really good, but ive been told by some friends that its strongly anti-Christian and God, so im not so sure now. I wikipedia'd it, and im not really sure. I might have to go see it to judge it-but just a warning, be careful if you were planning on taking the little ones to this one. According to the internet, they took a lot of the anti-God stuff out of the movie so it sells, but its still there in the books.

 | Re: The Golden Compass | | From my understanding, the movie is a watered down version of the book. The concept for the movie/books is to eventually kill God and interviews with the author of the books confirms this. That's my limited understanding.
There is a huge upset in the Christian community because of this. As with anything, the conspiracy theory jumps to the front of the line with comments that the movie is made for kids and is subtle on the religion aspect so to better fool them and their parents into getting the books for the kids, which have a stronger verse to them. As with anything, when someone doesn't believe the same thing as the masses, that person is automatically flagged as a hell-spawned demon with the intent of spewing evil amongst our world and poisoning our children with the vile ways and thoughts. I've yet to see a movie based on a book that matches the original story in the printed media and I don't foresee this being any different. But agian, simply because it is a sensitive issue, especially because the sensitive issue is religion, is it depicted as something terrible and that evil is trespassing on our lives in the guise of a children's movie.
So maybe it is and the author's intent to use this movie to draw kids into his world of God-killing desires and is indeed the reason for the taming down of the movie.
My thoughts on that are simple.
1. If you don't like that possibility, then don't go see the movie.
2. If your faith is weak enough to be swayed by a movie, then you shouldn't go see the movie.
3. If you could care less about religion or maybe you could care less about any message that the movie is trying to send out - then go see the movie.
It looks like a good movie. My son and I are sci-fi and fantasy nuts and based on the visuals - it looks pretty darn awesome! My son and I discussed it, I let him know the deal on it by presenting the facts and I am going to let him make that decision. He's almost 13 and if he can't make that kind of decision now, then I've failed miserably as a parent. I told him that if he wanted to go see it anyway, then I'd take him. His response is, "Dad, I know what I believe in and no movie is going to change my mind. I liked Superman but I don't think people can fly. I don't think anyone is dumb enough to believe they can kill God and if they are dumb enough then let them try. I think the movie looks cool."
So I decided we'd go. Then the wife chimes in saying that he is welcome to see it based on his thoughtful analysis, however, she would like him to think about the money...."Do you want to support someone who puts out a movie about killing God or talking bad about God?" He said no. Then the wife told him that the money he gains from people seeing the movie is where he make makes his money, thus, supporting him. He wasn't too cracked on hearing that.
So, the verdict is still out on if we are going to go see it or not. I'll go see it anyway but I'm able to do so for free so I'm not supporting anyne but my own interest. I mean, come on, how cool is it that someone is riding a polar bear?! It's a fantasy movie and that's all I'll take from it - sheer entertainment. Unless it sucks, then I'll be disappointed. |

Children: One boy 8, twin girls 7. | Re: The Golden Compass | | I agree that if your faith isn't strong enough then it shouldn't be seen. I let my children watch Harry Potter and Lord of the rings and they are not worshipping ghosts and goblins...haha They don't believe in Fairies or "the gods" from greek mythology and they've historical films. As long as they know it's not true. I have taught my children that some people believe differently then they do and that doesn't make them bad people. I try and encourage them to learn about others beliefs. If it is anti-God all my children would do is feel sorry for them and probably pray for them |

My son and I are also Sci-fi and Fantasy nuts. Well...really me, and he just loves everything I do.
If you haven't seen it, the movie "Equilibrium" is a fantastic Sci-fi movie with a great plot and cool fight scenes. It's about a future where we aren't allowed to feel emotion. It has Christian Bale as the ultimate badass.
I'd kick your wife though for having to throw that last comment into the decision making process. lol Geez...way to throw a guilt trip onto what looks like a very fun movie. |

Children: 4yo girl 1yo boy | Re: The Golden Compass | | Its a movie!!! Just like the boy said just cause Superman can fly doesn't mean all people can fly. I'll watch it first to see how much violence or evil imagery is in it before I would let my DD. I think it looks really cool. I'm sure I will wait for DVD rental. I havent been to an actual movie in over a year. Is Nicole Kidman into Scientology or was that just Tom? |

Children: Nichole | Re: The Golden Compass | | I will not be going to see it, not because I am afraid it will sway my religion but because I do not want to give the man who says " I want to kill God in the minds of children". And as pp have said this movie is suppose to be very watered down from the books but that was the way the writer wanted it. He wants (as he openly says) for parents to take young children to this movie see its not so bac and buy the books. I will say that I want to read teh books but again I will not buy it and support him so I will get them from the library. |

Why would you even read his books in the first place if you are so against him? |
