How do you go back to work after being out for years? This is a really big and immediate issue for me right now. I hope you can copy and paste this address,

Four years ago, I left my professional job to raise my daughter with the seeming support of my boss and coworkers. But now they seem to believe I have no skills. I included the address of an article that I really liked, which addresses the "steep and tricky on-ramp" back to work, specifically.

I am curious to hear your suggestions about how to get around these roadblocks?

I stayed home to raise my kids, but one for a year each. I know after my I started my son in daycare, I have to start at the bottom of the Job poll and work my way up. It's been 4 years sense I started working again. I have changed Job (working my way up) about 4 - 5 times. It's not easy, and unless you know someone (that knows someone....and so on) you may not be able to jump into something you want right away. However, will some self confidence (which I didn't have a the time) You maybe able to. You just need to make it really clear that you left your last job to raise your daughter. If you are qualified to do they job you are applying for, there shouldn't be a problem, unless the company you are applying for doesn't want to deal with the issues of you being out if kids are sick and so fourth (I worked for a job like that)....Ok well don't know if my babbling helps...just remember hun, keep your head high! Raising a child is the hardest and greatest job in the world. You will do fine, and don't give up. Keep me posted on what happens.

Thanks, Mouser. I can't believe it is so tuff, still. I am going to try again with this link because I like how this woman argues that being a mom is still a job, and it's not like you loose skills, but gain them! How can we articulate this to employers?? Try to copy and paste it, and then erase the spaces surrounding the two periods.

I am only this week going bck to work after 7 years of raising children,

I have done Certificate III in Business Admin last year so that this year whe my youngest started school i have up to date qualifications, I graduated with distinctions and couldnt get a job because I had no experience, It is such a vicious circle.

But I start at a Real Estate On Tuesday, Idid a resume drop and I got the job through that.

Hi there - I am only new to the forum, but feel this is something I understand.

I have worked with people over my years in business & I have often found the mums coming back into the workforce have often struggled with the new set of demands.

An example is one lady I used to work with, Solo Mum, had 1 child and she came back to work once she was comfortable with her darling in day care. Then the challenges were finishing work on time to collect her darling, running late in the morning because her darling was "playing up" and then the days she couldnt come in at all because her darling was sick. Fortunately we worked in a "family friendly business" that understood the difficulties, but not all companies are like that.

If you want to work outside of the home, setup your support network, setup alternatives, contingency plans for when you are running late, stuck in traffic and day care is closing.

The point I am trying to make is - be realistic about what you want to achieve by going back to work - if it is just to make some money - think about the challenges you will have to face and look to alternatives.

There are hundreds of different options for making money - Ebay, Internet marketing, Develop your hobby, provide an online service, the list is huge...

Work is for those who don't live their passion - Live your passion and you will never work another day again...

If only some people didn't have to work, I mean seriously if you are only working for money then rethink, I wish it was that easy. I know lots of people who do love their jobs but others...well not so much. My DH is working in a truck yard and driving semis as well. He doesn't love his job belive me, but with his 4 year college degree he can't do what he want to do, we would be even poorer then we are now. And believe me the interent is our ONLY luxery and we just got it a few months ago. I am a SAHM so this doesn't really apply to me since I do stay home. If I went back to work I would make nothing, literally daycare and gas would suck my paycheck to about 50 a week. Not worth it in my opinion.

I hear what you say - but I know first hand that if you open your mind to the thought that you can change and get what you want - you do get it - it might take awhile & you might have to do somethings you don't want to (like drive a rig) - eventually with the right thoughts you can make anything happen...

Thats true in most cases I would think. Sorry I ended that a bit snippy didn't mean to at all. My DD was throwing her milk cup on the floor.

Anyways he will most likely drive the rest of his working career and their are advantages to it. He gets 2 weeks a year paid vacation plus 1 week of paid sick leave that can be used together or broken up. No 401K but their is a retirement thing that the union pays. Just like they pay are healthcare. Its just not what he thought he would do. I know that deap down he loves driving though, you can see it in his eyes. lol
