I always thought it was mean, but someone brought up that if he needs to go spend a night at the vet or something a very large dog freaking out in a very small space could be a very bad thing.
He goes in there on his own to nap now. It's his comfy safe place. |

My pit, Brick loved her crate... she had one of those giant ones and it was her room.

I don't feel bad crating my dogs. They love their crates..and go in them to nap during the day with the door open. My rules are the crate is never used for punishment, and is only a positive place. I started off with them as pups feeding them in their crates and randomly throwing treats in there for them to find. I feel a lot safer with them in their crates especially in an emergency they are located right next to the front door and I can get them out of the house FAST if anything happens.

I trust my older dog outside of the crate but both pups are crated when we leave the house. You also stated earlier that your mom is home with them all day-that makes a difference. Honestly I just feel safer when them in their crates. In an emergency they are easy to locate and remove (try calling a scared pooch out from under the bed in the middle of a fire..yeah right LOL) and I don't have to worry about them getting hurt or shot if someone breaks into my house and gets attacked.
