 | language matters | | Hi i am new.
recently ive been thinking ...
what if I marry a non-russian girl, will my child not speak russian?
I mean if my grandparents will still be alive they only speak russian and my parents dont want to speak to a child in english...
I speak russian and english...
Also even if i do marry a russian girl, if my child knows russian and doesnt understand english and will have to go to kindergarten have to speak english.
What do you think about this...? |

Children: Jill born Jan 12, 1996 | Re: language matters | | It is a non issue. Kids naturally learn all languages that are spoken at home and the language that is common to culture in which they live. A colleague of mine has a 4 year old who speaks 3 languages as fluently as a 4 year old can. English, French, and Moroccan.
Another colleague, only spoke Russian and Ukrainian until she was 12, and she currently speaks and writes English as well as anyone else. |

Children: 3 Daughters: 5yrs, 3yrs, new baby girl born Aug. 9, 08 | Re: language matters | | My children speak english and spanish, I only speak english but my boyfriend (my girls father) speaks both english and spanish also. Even if you have children with someone who does not speak russian as long as you include it in there lives everyday they will learn it. I do know of some parents who speak 2 languges and there kids only speak english, this is because they didn't use it as an everyday language in the home (usually using it as a way to talk around their children, I think that is sad)

 | Re: language matters | | yeah but i dont want them to speak half-russian half english
how will i teach it to them
i cant hire 2 tutors... it would confuse them
and i dont want them speaking half-russian half-english...
and accent isnt considered a good thing either
but i want them to have accent in only language they speak in
but switching accents is hard :\
also if you have an english girlfriend the only spoken language will be english and my child wont learn any russian which is bad...
the only answer is russian girlfriend and then again what if we only speak russian at home and child has to go to school and only speaks russian...? |

Children: Nichole | Re: language matters | | You don't have to do anything. Speak both to your child. Now they typically say right in the beginning of speech, say a 2-3 year old. They may confuse the two languages at times and mix them up. But they catch on fairly quickly and will know the two without any problems.
It is truly a wonderful gift you are giving her. I wish we could do the same for Nichole. But unless Texan is a language of its own, then its just English for us |
