Overall, cloth diapers are seen as better for the environment. Some would argue that because of the resources used to keep them clean, but most seem to think that cloth is better environmentally. They are also cheaper overall.

The one time cloth seems clearly better is when it's time to toilet train your child. Some disposables are so aborbant that kids just don't feel the wetness. There's a theory that this is one reason why kids seem to train later...they just don't mind the disposables.

I used a diaper service. In this way I had the convenience of disposables while not worrying about the environmental impact. It also helped with cost. The diaper service cost more than just using cloth diapers, but less than disposables.

Interesting. One more thing I need to fully-research in the coming months... I like the sound of the diaper service so far though.

Cloth diapers are definitely better for the environment! I use disposables, though, because my child is in school (no cloth allowed) and frankly, I like the convenience.
I know cloth is better overall for the planet, but I do what I can in other areas so I have this one slip.

If you use a diaper service, it's important to know what you're getting into. For example, you want a service that uses commerical washers/dryers. You don't want to risk somebody trying to just clean all these diapers in their own home and maybe not cleaning them properly.

The way it worked for us was that they gave us a supply every week and gave us a diaper pail. We put the entire messy diaper into the pail (not any different than throwing away disposables) and they collected them at the end of the week, leaving us more.

We had to provide our own velcro diaper covers. Those were kind of fun to pick out.

We combined it with disposables. Sometimes, like when traveling, it is just much less hassle to use disposables.

I didn't use cloth diapers with my first, but I am expecting again soon and I'll be staying at home. I've already bought a stash of cloth diapers.

Although depending on the type you get, they can be expensive to get, but I have read figures ranging anywhere from $2,000-$6,000 for how much it costs to use disposables from the time the babies are born until the time they're potty trained. Not to mention, they also say the average baby contributes about a ton of waste to a landfill in disposable diapers. I believe it!

I think if you read up on the process and are comfortable with how to do it, it's a great way to go! I didn't think DH would go for it, but he actually is all for it!

I got some really cute diapers from a work-at-home-mom at www.luckybabybottoms.com. Her diaper covers have the best price I've seen, and they're so cute!

I don't use cloth diapers but I have many friends that do. They are expensive in the beginning but overall they are cheaper. Also you can wash them baby shampoo and thats environmentally better and cheaper then the Woolite stuff they say you should use. Also if anyone is interested many moms do diaper trading. You just have to google the sites for that though.
