As some of you know DD needed some fillings. In order to do that and because she is autistic our choices were either to restrain her during the procedure or have her put under anesthetic at the hospital. Insurance wouldn't cover. So we had to get her diagnosed as mildly retarded in order to get Medicaid to help.

The whole thing took about 4 hrs. the procedure (three fillings with caps + ex-rays) took about 25 min. The rest of the time was pre-op or post-op.

The bill from the hospital arrived yesterday $5041. And the denial from our insurance for the full amount also arrived. This bill does not include the dentist service. The bill will be covered by Medicaid. but only because we obtained the retarded diagnosis. When the entire process : getting the diagnosis (the retarded one), pre-op screening, dental bill, lodging/food. Its easily going to clear 8 or 9k to get three teeth filled.

Three months from now I will be without insurance.

Just a little food for thought.

Ugh...

Thankfully it's being covered by Medicaid. Is there anything else that needs to be done that you can get done before you're off of insurance?

you should be able to keep her the medicaid or CHIPS. chips has co-pays but it beats the heck out of nothin'. you might check into putting your son on one or the other too. it would all help if you don't mind the little bit of paperwork.
the medicaid and chips will also send a paper stating there was medical coverage for your kids so later on any new insurance can't get you for a pre-existing condition. they recommend that you keep that paper as proof of coverage when applying for new insurance.

I will be able to get COBRA, its cost more but still better than going without. Never heard of CHIPS? Hopefully I'll have a job by then. I am looking at several promising things.

The insurance guy was really cool. He was like. " I will send an appeal to the board for you. But you know they are going to deny it. I have a special needs kid too. This is what I would do." Very helpful guy.



I do know there are a lot of people in a worse place than me. What do you think they do?

C.H.I.P. is children's health insurance program. its part of medicaid
CHIP | Children's Medicaid
folks in worse shape rely heavily on the medicaid and chips.

You gotta do what you gotta do. Cole had to have major dental surgery and thankfully we had medicaid on top of our regular insurance his bill hit 10,000.

Our health system is screwed up, my kids over the age of 5 can have medicaid if we drop them from our policy, the kids under 5 can have our private insurance and medicaid picks up what would be "our" portion. Makes no damn sense why not let us keep our insurance and just pick up the rest? It's cheaper that way, but nope we have to drop them. We haven't had medicaid in a while cause the lasst few years we have had amazing insurance, 90/10 and they covered a lot of appoinments with out requiring us to first meet our deductable, they have since changed it and I am thinking about getting medicaid again...but it is such a hassel!

every single one of you needs to move to canada....seriously!!! I have never heard of such nonsense until i met a few ppl that lived in the states!!! Our medical is covered either by Petes employer or the government, and if the governenment doesnt cover, then the province steps in and you pay a minimal fee per month (usually around 100-200 a month_ to BC medical...End of story....no 5,000 dental bills, no letters saying you arent covered....We'd love to have ya'll in the great white north

tell me about it! i Hate! going in or calling about the mess. the attitudes here are that "you don't need or deserve it." well yes the kids do need it and deserve it. our Taxes help pay for it!
we haven't known one month to the next whether the kids will be on medicaid or chips. a caseworker screwed up their file last spring. put both girls on the wrong one. every month since september past we have gotten a letter telling us the kids will be on this one or that one. each time it has been different.
the only reason we bother with it is the kids.
i'll be quite about the health insurance...having the right to deny a person medical care and "it" ain't covered in your policy.

I couldnt do it. We supplied engineering support to a Canadian company and I had to work with a Canadian girl over the phone. I CANT FUNCTION WITH THAT FRENCH CANADIAN ACCENT! My knee's go weak, my palms start sweating, just thinking about her.

You know I'm not big about talking politics. And I'm not sure Obama has "the plan". But at least he has "a plan" I lot of people don't realize losing your insurance even for a short time has the potential to bankrupt a person in short order. Its would be terrible to not be able to make a mortgage payment. How do you catch back up with that?

AHAHAHA!!!! oh the french canadians....hate to disappoint bssage...but i dont have one of those just a plain jane canadian accent haha.

And like 16th said...your taxes pay for it.....but the sad part is is that your taxes also pay for the 1billion dollar a day or whatever the amount is war in the middle east....i seriously dont even know what the war is for anymore. Move to bc bssage, then you wont have to worry bout the francaphone accent lol
