Default Teach children how to think for themselves (Asbury Park Press)

Parenting means sometimes having to walk a fine line. We want our children to live using the values we teach them, but one of our main jobs is to teach them to think for themselves so they can grow into independent beings. Our objective is for them to learn to make good decisions when we are not around to decide for them.

This is a point that I keep on coming back to when I have conversations with other parents. It's hard to imagine when your baby's a baby that you're responsible for helping him or her learn to THINK; to learn to LEARN...but that's really an important truth that I wish more parents would take seriously, earlier.

And they learn everything, even what you don't want them to! I know one of Nicholes 1st words was "uh-uh" while shaking her head no. I had no idea where she picked that up until I cought myself saying one time and she mimicked me. Now thats just a little thing but. Another thing I have noticed is my friends have a almost 3 year old and she pretends to smoke. Drives me nuts!! But she doens't understand taht what she is doing is "smoking" or that it is bad, just thats what mom and dad do, so..... You have to be careful!

Of all the important things to teach kids, the one that is sorely missed is tolerance. Many time intolerance is taught as part of the values handed down by parents.

I tired to encourage my sons to observe, not just slap on a "values" label; to look at the choices around them, knowing that I would not reject them outright..but then I tend to be a very liberal parent.

I think in the case of values, more is caught then taught, which isn't the best way for children to learn them. I agree, children need to be taught to be respectful of ALL people, BUT that doesn't mean they have to agree with the person, or what the person does.

children learn so much from us even when we don't mean to be that way. Like my husband called me on his cell today (He drives semis) and just made a comment about how all of the people that were unloading his truck were a certain ethnicity. He didn't say it to be racist of derogatory, just as a fact, but I had to remind him that it is still innapropriate to say. They are just people and that is all that needs to be said. The statement he made was something like "And a bunch of ___ are unloading my truck now" Instead of just a bunch of guys are unloading my truck.
