After doing mostly mediocre work, he was able to do something good... his teacher praised him... and it seemed to work as a stimulus for him to do more excellent school work... Sometimes, it just takes a word of praise to stimulate a kid's need to achieve and change his life from one of mediocrity to one of excellence... I know it happened to me...

Try to catch him doing something good and praise him as much as possible. Make a big deal out of good grades and watch it snowball!
