Children: 1 Boy | Screaming when being fed. Has this happened to you? | | Hello,
I'm brand new here. My wife gave birth to our son, Brian, in May of this year. Of the two of us, I'm definitely more of the worrier.
I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this: You start to feed your infant from the bottle and a moment later, he/she is screaming bloody murder and arching away from the bottle. Now, Brian is being treated for acid reflux. So I don't think its that. What seems to be happening is that he drinks too fast and it goes down the wrong pipe. This hasn't been a constant problem but it has reared its head a bit more recently. It may happen two to three times a week. Today, the 20th, it has been going for most of the feedings today.
I'm just wondering: Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what do you think it is and what have you done about it? |

Also are you using a fast, or slow nipple? |

Children: 3 Daughters: 5yrs, 3yrs, new baby girl born Aug. 9, 08 | Re: Screaming when being fed. Has this happened to you? | | when my daughter was about 2 months old she had somthing a little different than this, She did scream when eating and arch her back (a lot) and she was treated for acid reflex. She also had perjectile vomiting too... At first they though it was her stomach (the opening not being able to hold food in), but ultrasound didn't show that (and she was gaining weight fine). Then they switched her to soy formula (this made it worse).. They put her on a few different meds, When I didn't see an improvement I decided to switch her formula to a new formula I saw in a magazine (Enfamil gentalease - for baby's with fussiness and gas - its in a purple can)... She did fine ever since (switching to milk at a year went fine too)

I would highly recommend the gentalease though |

Children: 1 Boy | Re: Screaming when being fed. Has this happened to you? | | We went to the doctor today and he put Brian on soy formula. This was as much for the diarrhea he has had as the screaming during feeding.
The first go around with feeding with the soy formula was less than stellar but he did eat after about a 5 minute freak out. I wonder if it was because he has just developed a reaction that every time he is feed it is going to be an unpleasant experience.
At the least, he isn't losing any weight. He came in at 13 lbs. Just about a month ago, he was 11 lbs. and some ounces.
Thank you for the support, everyone. |

Mu daughter was on soy too. just a little warning though, from our experience it makes the poop green and extra stinky |

Children: 1 Boy | Re: Screaming when being fed. Has this happened to you? | | I can't imagine its any worse than the diarrhea. And his poop has ranged from a mustard yellow to a greenish brown. And any smell will be better than the rotten onion smell that has been in coming out recently.
As an afterthought, has anyone else been driven away from certain foods because the poop has smelled a certain way? I noticed his poop, at one point, smelled an awful lot like burnt popcorn. |

You are right it probably is a fear of eating he ahs. It should subside. I would definately watch it, A LOT of babies who are lactose intolerant are also soy intoleratnt. GASSY babies is not the normal. It should not hurt them. If he is still having problems on the new formula, don't hesitate to tell your doc. He may need a prescription formula that is both lactose and soy free. They are pricey but... its your babies comfort we are talking about |
