I wonder if the girl you work with has seen the video they show of a circ being done on a newborn baby, it was terrible...there's a thread in the parenting debate section that is about the pros and cons a bit also.

the problem with that video is to many pro-circ can say that their child didn't cry at all. I guess they say that babies have a hard time dealing with the pain so their bodies shut down, there fore don't cry. But any one with half a brain knows that it would hurt right? That video is so sad!
I tried to get DH to watch it he just said no. lol

can you imagine putting you newborn through so much pain that their body shuts down???OMG I don't care if they stop feeling, why would you want them to get to that point? I do think every family should do what they feel is best but for me it's just to much for a cosmetic thing

Heres a little history about circumcision that isn't widely known.

John Harvey Kellogg was a holistic doctor in the late 1800s and ran a popular "spa." (my great great grandmother would go every summer!)

He was convinced that masturbation was the root of all delinquency in men - such things as alcoholism, rape, thieving, murder, etc....

His cure for masturbation was a diet steeped in nuts and whole grains (and he went on to develop a breakfast cereal with his brother as a result - yes, he is one of those Kelloggs!) and circumcision in boys without anesthetic!

"
A remedy for masturbation which is almost always successful in small boys is circumcision. The operation should be performed by a surgeon without administering an anesthetic, as the brief pain attending the operation will have a salutary effect upon the mind, especially if it be connected with the idea of punishment."

In order to get his idea to catch on, he fell in league with family doctors - and together they published flyers that detailed the signs of a future adult delinquent. Traits to look for in your young boys include such things as: biting fingernails, fidgeting, absent mindedness, etc....

Mothers were understandably concerned and flocked to their doctor to get their boys circumcised.

Now, Kellogg was an American - and this phenomenon was pretty much limited to our country. That is why circumcision, among non Jewish males, is so common here - and not in other countries around the world.

Having heard all of this background - doesn't it seem silly to cut off a part of the penis just because our parents did it?

The whole "unclean" and "gross" nonsense has always bewildered me. Smegma doesn't really develop until just before puberty anyway. You're not supposed to retract the foreskin before its ready - and cleaning the penis is just as labor intensive as cleaning an elbow.

Women and girls have JUST as much discharge as boys and uncircumcised men do - but we certainly aren't thwapping off our lady parts just to avoid some bodily fluids. :rolleyes

I had not heard that story. I always thought it was related to Jewish customs. I personally know of one set of parents who attend a church that very specifically teaches boys about the evils related to masturbation in a boys only Bible study class; apprently according to some part of the Bible, a boy is likely to become sterile or have a low sperm count from masterbating. If this is indeed is true, the world's population is singificantly reduced by at least 99.9% of what it would be otherwise.

well good I am glad it is reduced. lol can you imagine? \

I had heard the story but in bits so it was nice to see it in one place thanks!

I can honostly say that I didn't know better before. But started getting into debate forums over breast/bottle (never particiapted just read, its where I learned most of what I know) They are educated debates though (well most of the time lol) so it was all based on studies and such not personal opinion. Anyways thats when I noticed the circ boards. I guess I just thought thats what everyone did. Now come to find out......
They say that this year they are expected for the first time that there will be more people opting out of circing then those who do. Expected to be around 55% not circing newborn boys.

oh that masturbation guy! wow he most of had some serious sex issues! huh? I'm not sure if the bible mentions anything about it, but I will have to go look up some stuff you have me curious.

And another side note! lol I can't say I am against circ because I do think people have a religious right. But circumcision is vastly differnet now then it was back in the time when it was tought to be done. Having it done in a hospital is vastly differnt then circing at a rabbii's as well. And from what I have hear is that they do have a new custum that allows them to opt out of circing. Not sure how it works though.

Jewish customs do maintain regular circ stats globally - its the non-jewish males that the numbers start to become disproportionate.

Its like the woman who always cuts off the side of her ham before baking it, but not knowing why. When she finally asks her mom about it - her mother explains its because HER baking pan was too small to fit the ham!! So many things we do automatically are because its something that "is just done" and no one ever thinks to question.

I am getting way off topic with this one. Marijuana was originally made illegal as a way to suppress the Hispanic culture, not because it was considered a harmful drug. The drug angle was simply political spin to make the Hispanic culture look like criminals and drugs users\pushers back in the early part of 20 century.

Not condoning\condemning Marijuana use, just pointing out there are many things we rationally accept as being wrong based on misinformation or personal\social\religious justifications.
