Children: 4yo girl 1yo boy | Bad words at your house? | | What words do you consider "bad" at your house? In my home our list is:
hate, stupid, crap, damn, sucks, plus all other adult four letter words. My stepdaughters mom considers "fart, farted" a bad word. So I taught my DD that farted is flatulence. I'm tettering on the word "jerk". |

I see "bad" words as arbitrary and culturally defined so the only 4 letter word that bothers me if it were to fall from the mouths of the five is the "f" word. They don't say the others, though, because DW doesn't like them.

Children: 4yo girl 1yo boy | Re: Bad words at your house? | | I'm trying to remember this quote I heard awhile back.....something like cussing is the window to a feeble mind. I think too much cussing just makes you look like a dummy. My DD grandparents sound like truck drivers or some hard core rap song. I'd rather not hear stuff like that from my precious 4yo DD. Even for myself I try to find a better more productive way to describe my feelings. Although if I'm by myself and I lock the keys in the car you can bet I'll be saying the "f" word over and over. Use the right word in the right situation. |

Children: Natalie is here and beautiful! | Re: Bad words at your house? | | My husband and I have just started practicing not cussing, so we'll be better about it when my daughter's born.
I remember when I was like 4 I told my grandma I farted, and she said, "We don't say fart, we say toot." I remember rolling with laughter making run of her...
We're just going with things she won't be able to get away with at school, and the things jenilouise mentioned.

Children: Natalie is here and beautiful! | Re: Bad words at your house? | | Oh! and saying things that are derogatory to another race or culture - I think this a very important thing to make sure you don't "accidentally" teach your child. I recently overheard my in-laws talking about "ching-chongs" (Asian people) in front of my niece who is mixed. I was so upset with them. They don't seem to realize that my niece is going to know one day that her grandparents feel that their race is superior, and she's not the same race as them...

I'm tettering on the word "jerk". | Our list is pretty much like yours. We include words that are derogatory to others...retard, jerk, idiot, etc. And the phrase "that's so gay," used to refer to something ridiculous. Just SAY ridiculous, for heaven's sake!! Oh, and we don't really mention flatulence in any manner...it's just a normal bodily function, and doesn't need to be drawn to the rest of the world's attention...LOL. Shut up is also on the list.

| Re: Bad words at your house? | | well, me myself use almost all of the above, except retarded, i DONT like that word. but im gonna censor myself around my future kids because as much as it really doesnt bother me personally, id rather them not be useing such words in school, public, when we have company, ect ect. it would reflect badly on me as a parent i believe. and i want to be a good father. if they use one, though, ill simply explain it to them without gettin upset with them because they're young, they dont know what words can and cant be used if they hear adults sayin them. so i wouldnt even bring it up unless they use them

I see what you're saying. No one in our family uses them, so we have led by example. And when they did bring them home, we just told them those were words that we don't use in our family because we think they are "ugly" words. And after a reminder or two, they stop using them.
