Because people are who they are, and they do things for reasons that sometimes we cannot understand. And sometimes, if you look at the whole picture - it is understandable, while still being dark and warped. It doesn't excuse it, but it can be understood.
I'm as judgmental as the next person - and I don't think thats a bad thing. In my life, though, understanding is one of the most important qualities I can aspire to. I believe I'm a better mother for it, a better wife, a better friend.... and I don't have to be eaten up by what happened because I know that this individual didn't do it out of malice - no matter how abhorrent the act was.
The only way I was able to get to that point was because I took the time to understand and didn't shut my eyes to the whole of who he is.
I can sincerely say that I don't think he is evil. I don't think he is bad. I think he is broken... and because he can't see that, he cannot have a place in my life anymore.
