I read this on Friendly Atheist, and I found it extremely disconcerting (and funny) that it's the fathers who actually sign the pledge, not the daughters. The girls actually have no say in it.

Additionally, a few of them have admitted to premarital sex already, though most of them regret it.

Either way, I'd think it'd be a semi-good idea if the girls were the ones pledging abstinence. The whole religion aspect bugs me, but then again, this is for the religious so I can't really say anything =] But I also wish that maybe they could realize that safe sex + condoms is not sinful, and start preparing their children for the inevitable (no matter what, once they marry they're still going to have sex) and teach them how to *ahem* safely.

I did a similar pledge my freshman year in high school. My parents did not attend for some reason, but they were ecstatic that I did it. A year later I had a miscarriage before I knew I was pregnant .

If the girl makes the pledge to herself and really believes it, it can work. But without true faith behind it, its just kind of a farce. (I converted a few months later to Paganism, and it suits my sexual views much more completely.)

Ivy, I think a lot of people can related. Our daughter's circle of friends are 11-12 and all pretty innocent girls, but the odds are that over the course of the next few years some of those girls aren't going to remain very innocent despite how nice/good girls they are right now. At this age, the idea of waiting to get married to have sex is very romantic, and they all, more-or-less, believe they are going marry a man who is prefect in all ways they can imagine, and they ride off into the sun set the day they get married to live happily ever after.

Not so. Although some atheists can be really up-in-your face and be all, "EVOLUTION IS TEH WAY! CHRISTIANS ARE STOOPID!!11!1", one cannot base those name-calling idiots as the stereotype for all atheists (And neither can one call all Christians stupid, since you can't apply such a huge label to people who only carry that as one aspect of their lives. Many are really intelligent, like the scientist who mapped the human genome). There are plenty of atheists that are rather friendly and won't try to make you...er...a non-believer. =]
