If it's a Disney movie, I've no problem taking my children. I've done it many times.

If it's anything other than that, and I don't know for a fact what all is in the movie, we wait for it to come out on DVD, then I watch it, and if it's suitable for the kids, they can watch it.

I take Bek to the 'Mums and Bubs' sessions, but theyre always kids movies.

On the topic of seeing a movie before your kids, from my view, if its a Disney cartoon, thats pretty much a guarentee that it will be all good for Bek, but she's pretty resilliant to 'scarier' themes. She'll be one of those people who get bored during gorey horror movies when she's older, I can tell. Her current favourite movie is The Dark Crystal, she loves it, however all my nieces and nephews are terrified of that movie, and theyre all older than her.

I wouldn't allow my kid to go to a movie that he is not old enough to understand or sit still through....i.e. infants should never be in a theatre, toddlers only if it is a movie for young kids (animated, Disney/Pixar, etc.). However my ex has gotten my son into Star Wars since Day 1 and he's now an Indiana Jones freak at age 8. They both have good morals, they are not gruesome, and he understands it. There are certain movies that are a little bit more graphic that he's watched, but I have used my own judgement on what he should and shouldn't watch. It's not like I'll expose him to everything, but some exposure is good so that he is not getting too 'curious' or 'mischevious' later on. When an unsuitable part comes up in a movie, I may either tell him to leave the room or if I feel it's ok, I'll explain to him what he sees is not good/nice. You can't filter your children too much or else they will discover it elsewhere and possibly not know better.

A woman whose son is in playgroup with Bek has an older son, whose 8, we were talking about movies and t.v shows yesterday and she mentioned how inappropriate Disney movies are for children, I got her to explain what she was talking about and man, I think she's off her nutter.

According to her, The Lion King is bad for her 8yr old because it deals with death, Mulan and Pocahontas are bad because it introduces children to cultures different to their own and they may get confused at such a young age, The Little Mermaid is bad because mermaids dont actually exist, so it may confuse children. And dont get her started on any movie with talking animals.

I asked her what movies and t.v shows her older son does watch, and she said that she dosent let him watch movies, and he's only allowed to watch kids game shows that are educational.

I couldnt imagine sheltering my child that much.

I watched 10,000 BC tonight.. first of all my lil one would be terrified.
We did have it on in the same room but he figured out it wasn't his bag in the first 5 minutes and focused on building a track around the corner and ignored it completely.. otherwise we'd have to of turned it off. Very good movie, but not for kids at all. (my gosh the main gal in there was so pretty).

I have not yet taken him to his first show in the theatre.. I was thinking of taking him to the new Wall-E this weekend.. but I'm chicken I think. I'm not sure he'd stay /quiet/ (for sure) and/or sit through the whole thing.
