Parenting Debate Discuss Spanking Children in the General Parenting Forums forums; No to spanking.
The best (worst) punishment is time-out. Children HATE to sit still and be quiet. But, it doesn't hurt anybody.... | | | |

Children: One boy 8, twin girls 7. | Re: Spanking Children | | Oh brother.......a swat on the butt isn't going to mentally screw up a child. Why does a swat on the butt have to be violent? My children have never felt pain from me or do they fear me. So I disagree with "enviroment of pain and fear" That's rubbish. Never mind........I see the "healthy planet.com".........tree huggers normally swing at the opposite end of the spectrum. |

Never mind........I see the "healthy planet.com".........tree huggers normally swing at the opposite end of the spectrum. | As a tree hugger I'll add to this...when my dd was in diapers I would swat her hand when she was in danger or pat her butt when she was going somewhere she shouldn't. I don't consider this spanking and I do not think my child fears me hurting her in any way. I think before we throw out generalizations on what people do or don't do with their children we should consider that everyones idea of spanking is different

My language was as strong as it was because I am referring to parents who regularly use physical violence (and hitting someone is violent) instead of taking the time to teach and guide their kids. I've had friends who felt it was fine to slap their child's face, pull their hair, and leave marks after a spanking.
I believe that a swat here and there can escalate into this kind of behavior and is best to avoid physical punishments. I also know that there is overwhelming evidence and expert opinions that agree with me.
PS: And if our kids are going to have a future at all...we all better start hugging more trees!

" If you don't stop crying, I'll just give you more".... smack, smack, smack. I can only imagine what happens behind closed doors back at home.
And as I have pointed out before, when kids end up in the emergency room as result of punishment gone to far with a broken arm, or dislocated shoulder, more often than not, it is an average parent, with a steady job, from stable family, who went too far one afternoon. It's just not the stereo typical low income, single parent, from a dysfunctional home. 30+ years ago, doctors might have looked the other way when a parent said "He fell off the swing set" but they are much more knowledgeable about how to detect physical injury that has been inflicted by an adult as opposed to how kids normally get injured in non life threatening ways.

Children: Brian, 23; Adrienne, 19: Amy, 16 | Re: Spanking Children | | In nearly 22 years of parenting, with three children, I have never used spanking. I don't believe it is ever necessary to hit another human being, except in self-defense. That is not to say that my children were not and are not subject to discipline. Discipline is teaching...and I've been teaching them since the day they were born, in one way or another, and hope that I will be able to teach them until I die.

Wife to Barry Mother to Brian,Adrienne and Amy Christianity is not a religion like most people think. Christianity is a life of imitating Jesus. |

PS: And if our kids are going to have a future at all...we all better start hugging more trees! | I give mine a swat here and there and so do several of my dear friends who have awesome kids and none of us have ever "escalated". I don't think children should be hit in the face, or have hair pulled that's just abuse in my book. If I were to see an adult do that to a child in public I would say something to that parent and I have done it before. This is another reason I am looking into Gaurdian ad litum. |
