I see what you are saying Brent.
However tv is very vital in a few ways. My friends daughter is border line Aspergers (autism spectrum) She is a beautiful 20 month old little girl but has sensory issues. She will spin in circles fors 20 minutes if there is too much going on. Her doctors WANT her to watch tv. They think that if she can learn to concentrate on the television (approproate shows mind you) that this will help her to be productive in the future.
And as far as answering back, Nichole does!! She is 20 months old and loves to answer back. Not to Blues Clues as we don't have that one. But when Elmo asks her name, she yells it out!! When Elmo Potty DVD asks her where her poopoo and peepee go, she yeslls out "Potty!!" So some kids do answer back.
Now I do agree that too much is well jsut too much. It should not take the place of a parent. Even though I will admit the tv has watched NIchole once or twice, because I was sick and well it is easier sometimes. Not good but easier. I do not believe this will affect her in a negative way since it is not often.
I also strongly believe in watching the tv with your child. When Blues Clues asks where the clue is, ask your child "where is it? Do you see it?" Get involved. Though you are right that in most cases painting the chair out side is better anyday.

I totally disagree with you evil. TV may not be the best teacher but it can be educational, maybe your kids didn't try to answer the questions on blues clues but mine sure did, and at 1 1/2 my daughter started speaking Spanish while watching Dora, and she knew exactly what she was saying by 2. Her preschool teacher was amazed by how much Spanish she knew, when they started teaching it in school she had to ask my daughter to let some of the other kids have a chance to answer. I'm not saying you should let your kids watch TV all day all night but I am saying that you can't make generalizations for every child based on yours. As far as threatened children... I take away privileges when my dd gets out of line...she doesn't like it...she doesn't do whatever she did again. I don't threaten her, she knows the rules and she knows what will happen if these rules aren't followed. Personally I think teaching your children that there are always consequence to your actions, whether good or bad, does make them a better person.

>>>Fooser - on this first point: punishment/reward... can you see that this way of dealing with your kids is getting only a superficial, temporary win in 'behaviour'?

Uhh...it gets my kid to fall in line real fast. Of course it's temporary, but it works pretty well. I don't know why you wrote a bunch of nothing about this method? If you're going to write a novel about parenting techniques that don't work, at least offer some better suggestions and why.

I don't expect him to be a better person, I expect him to listen and obey the rules. That IS life. We also give our son choices, and we feel that teaches him about life just fine. If he wants to act out of line, he loses his TV. If he doesn't want to eat his dinner, he loses dessert. If he doesn't want to go to the corner, he loses a toy. If he whines, we don't go to Chuck E Cheese. Whatever the case may be...he has learned to be a good kid that doesn't need to be told more than twice to do something.

Even if this method only works until he's 16...lol...that's 16 years of very easy parenting. When he gets older, we'll fine a method that works then too.

>>> Television is not educational.

Are you trying to be dumb just to get off on debating? There are plenty of channels and shows that can be education for kids. Haven't you seen Animal Planet or the Discovery Channel? Or those wacky science shows for kids? Or Sesame Street? Even Little Einstien's have music from famous composers that children being exposed to and start to hum.

If I stuck my kid in front of the tube to learn everything instead of going to school, yeah....of course he wouldn't benefit from it. But there are definitely some shows that he watches, and we watch together, that give him knowledge.

Amazingly enough. I agree with Fooser again.
How else do you teach a child about rules. You hit them (wrong) or you show them consequences in a positive way. Good behavior gets rewards!! ( very important, more so them discipline) Bad behavior has consequences

We've done without our tv, and we've had it going what seemed non-stop. I prefer it to be off and for us to listen to some decent music. My hubby turns it on immediately upon returning home, though.
