Default Too stupid to take care of ourselves?

This is a spin off of the anti spanking thread.

The whole thing really gets me pretty furious to think about so I'll keep it brief.

Are we as a society too stupid to take care of ourselves? The government seems to think so..it's illegal to not wear your seatbelt (as if that affects anyone other than the individual) they recall anything with a possible choking hazard..etc. This morning I looked at the warning label on Nolan's jumperoo and it said something along the lines of tying my child to the toy was "dangerous"...honestly? Why do I need you to tell me that? And Bumbo seats being recalled? Etc..I'll elaborate on my feelings if anyone wants but I figure this is enough to get this thread started.

So..the government passing "personal protection" laws good or bad?

Actually, one person not wearing a seat belt in a vehicle can become a deadly projectile to other passengers.

GRAPHIC

The officer at the end says, "Three dead in this vehicle. The girl is critical. They say the guy without the seat belt did the damage."

I suspect many of the seemingly common sense warnings came about because people who got injured from actually doing those things tried to sue the product manufacturers.

As libertarian as I am, I'm ok with seatbelt laws because the public services I pay for are going to scrape the moron off the road.

This one I figure is on there because someone at some point was stupid and sued to blame the company for them being stupid.
That's something totally different from government interference.

Oh I know..the thread is about society as a whole..the question at the end is aimed towards government because society doesn't have much control over warning labels but we do have control over elected officials.

Actually, I think personal protection laws are good. Saves us money on bogus lawsuits by idiots who leave their baby in the Bumbo all day and night by themselves. Just disregard them if you actually have a brain.

Well, as for the recalls and all the warnings on the products, that's mainly (I think) because we got morons in the world who don't have a lick of common sense, got themselves hurt, sued for millions of dollars and bankrupted a company. Now, I think many companys just want to safeguard themselves against any liability. Kinna like the McDonalds/hot coffee case.

Yes, exactly why there are stupid warnings on things. Cuz you just know SOMEONE was stupid enough to do it.

How about the people who have to pick the dead bodies up off the highway? And their families? I don't see that as govt interference.

I do think it's crazy and sets a bad precendent to ban spanking (even though I stronly disagree with spanking), because it could be anything, the important thing is, they are trying to tell us how to raise our kids. Once they open this door, then there is no telling what else they can do...

IMO, One of the dumbest 'self protection' laws is Breed Specific Legislation.... outlaw certain dogs because dumb people can't figure out how to take care of them.
