I think this is normal. They go through these phases, the question is how do you respond to the phases so they can pass quickly (at least the phases you don't like). You should always ask yourself if your actions are encouraging or discouraging the behavior. If you give attention to the whining, you are encouraging. Even negative attention (such as scolding) is encouraging the behavior because from their point of view, negative attention is better than having you off doing something else and not paying ANY attention to them. And if they're bored, it's easier to whine and get your attention than to actually go and find something to do on their own.

Agree that when they're sick, all bets are off and pamper the heck out of them!

Funny, just this past week Oliver has been VERY whiney. It's driving me crazy. I try to ignore him but it's so hard.

my two year old started being really whiny about a month ago, and its getting worse everyday. The tantrums are getting so hard to ignore, if i yell it makes it worse, if i talk to her calm it makes it worse if i mimic her it makes it worse, she usually ends up throwing objects or herself on the floor. I have no idea what to do anymore.
