Default Anything wrong with pedialyte?

Hey threre guys. I was just wondering if there's anything wrong with giving my infant (9 months old) pedialyte for no reason? He's not sick or anything, which its used to rehydrate. When he's thirsty I will mix about 4oz pedialyte and 2oz of apple juice or whatever to water down the juice. I could use water, but pedialyte has more hydrating factors in it that and its hot durning the summer.

I was just wondering if there would be any problems by giving him pedialyte?? Or should I just use water?

I've been giving it to him like that for the past month or so and he's been fine with it (ie no diarrhea or anything like that).

Thanks!!

Unless he is sweating, vomiting, or has diarrhea..do not give him pedialyte. It replenishes his electrolytes..(sodium, potassium, etc) and if he ends up with an overload of them it could essentially stop his heart. Sorry I'm not trying to be dramatic, I don't know if any babies have gotten sick from pedialyte in the way you are using it but electrolyte replacement is what it's for and too many will stop a person's heart.

I would just ask your doctor. It says right on the bottle to use under the direction of your doctor. Also take a look at the ingredients, make sure they agree with you. I never assume something is good for my son until I've read the ingredients. I could be wrong but I think its full of sweeteners and stuff. Whereas fruit juice has actual nutritional factor, the pedialyte would only be kinda like a sweetened hydrating filler. If it were me I would personally find it more sensible to drink a glass of grape juice or whatever rather than a bottle of Gatorade. But that's just the way I look at it. I've always heard of watering down a baby's juice, but personally I have never done that. My boy isn't a good eater though so I try to squeeze in nutrition wherever I can get it. But of course, there's never anything wrong with a big old cup full of ice water on a hot day.

I agree, I'd dilute the juice with water or better yet give him just water some of the time. I know we created a juice adict in my youngest. There's nothing wrong with teaching them early that drinking is for thirst, not really so much a nummy snack.

ditto with the others. plus too much or too little (i forget which one) potassium can cause cramps. and we know ya don't want that.
water is best. but keep it cool. not ice cold. the ice cold could cause cramps too.
also, if the heat is really getting to baby, wipe her/him down with a damp wash cloth every now and then and use one on yourself. it helps with cooling.

Although I definitely wouldn't recommend it for children or babies just because its hot out, most athletes that sweat a lot drink pedialyte instead of gatorade.

If you put something cool on their wrists it keeps babies cool and hydrated, you can even just run their wrists under the cold tap every now and again. I would go for water not juice, even fruit juice is just full of sugar and really bad for your teeth and gums.
