Default Biting

My grandson will be two in May, and has been biting since he has had teeth. It is getting worse his daily caretaker is starting to complain. My daughter and her husband have tried several approaches with him to get him to STOP this habit. What worked with my daughter when she was young will not work for him. Any suggestions?

Most kids go through a biting stage, some more so than others. Other than a firm, "NO biting!" and redirecting to a different activity, have you tried giving him things that are acceptable to bite on, like teethers? Kids will bite when they're teething. They bite out of frustration due to lack of communication skills or hunger or tiredness. They will also bite because they've learned it's gets a rise out of the people around them. If a child gets a lot of attention from a behavior, even negative attention, they will continue.

When my kids went through this phase my parents told me to bite them back. Sorry, but I fail to understand this philosophy. How does biting them back teach them that biting is wrong??

Good luck!

I'm with trina. My friends 2 year old has been known to bite, and she has a bitey thing now and it has helped a lot.
Nichole was only about 8 months old when she started the biting thing, mainly when nurseing but then also on my thigh or shoulder if I was carrying her.
The only thing that worked for her was picking her up, setting her down somewhere, telling her "we do not biite" and walking away. She hated it!!
You have to be VERY consistant though

My 2 1/2 yr. old was a biter. Yes I can say WAS now. Up until a few months ago she would bite everyone. We tried everything and even did a time-out thing. Nothing worked. UNTIL one of the kids I babysat started biting back. She stopped and hasn't done it since.
