Default Crazy Grandparents

When My twins were born I did everything myself and didn't want my mother's input because the woman is unstable...no joke...seriously.

I probably spent more time shielding myself from her then just being a kid and didn't want my sons exposed to some of the manipulative behavior and her inability to think in a relatively logical fashion.

Have any of you had to curtail contact with the grandparents when many would be strengthening the bonds out of a sense of family? Did you find that you had to accept help, like babysitting or the sort of things that grandmothers usually help new mothers with, when you knew it probably wasn't wise?

Children: Nichole
Default Re: Crazy Grandparents

Thats a tough one. I also have grandparents that I don't want to have a ton of personal contact with my daughter. (my in-laws). My father in law physically abused his kids and MIL just sat back and did nothing to stop it. Now they have made amends with their kids (my husband and sister in law.) however I refuse to ever allow them to be alone with Nichole. Luckily they live in LA. and I'm in TX, but they will not be able to have Nichole go spend a week with them kind of thing. Just not going to happen.
In your case I would take it as it comes. If you are not comfortable letting them watch your twins (congrats by the way, I couldn't imagine the struggles you go through daily) then don't let them. As far as advise I would take all the advise they want to give you and listen, some of it may be good, but take it as a grain a salt. Listen to everything and use what you need. HTH

My parents and I had/have a pretty shaky truce, if you will. I've had to set rules about what I'm okay with them saying to or doing with my kiddos in some ways, but it's gotten a bit better over the years. One of the things that was great for me to realize was that just because we lived nearby didn't mean we had to visit frequently and I could do it on my own terms. It still makes me sad that I don't have what I hoped for and my kids don't either, but boundaries and personal mental health is more important.

You have to nip it in the bud. I started setting the rules in the first few days. Or else they would let him get away with everything.
