Children: 1 Boy
Default Falling out of the toddler bed

We recently converted Brian's (14.5 months) crib into a toddler bed. Not because he is toddling just yet but because he climbs like a mountain goat and we were watching him climb onto things that were taller than the railing of his crib.

The only problem, and it hasn't even happened that often, is that when he is asleep he has fallen out of the cut out portion of the railing where kids are supposed to climb in and out (my picture of the bed is too large to upload for a visual). This has resulted in several rude awakenings for him at night.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent him from falling out? I place him in the bed away from the entry but during the night, he usually squirms about quite a bit.

Can you add a couple of pillows on each side of him to prevent him from rolling? It may not be great, but it will at least be a preventative and a psychological barrier.

Also, I googled "toddler bed rails" and came up with quite a few decent solutions.

When we transitioned our kids from the crib to a bed we started with the mattress on the floor and pillows along the edges. If they did roll off they didn't have far to go and they landed on pillows. When they got older we put the mattress up on a bed frame with a bed rail.

We also put a gate on their bedroom doors because we didn't want them exploring the house unbeknownst to us while we slept.
