Children: I only have one daughter | HELP! Ear infections that don't go away! | | My daughter is 14 months old. She had colic and almost never stopped crying from birth to 5 months. Just when I thought that was all over she got an ear infection. Who would have thought that I would sit here today and say that I would take the colic over this nightmare anyday. My baby has maybe been infection/fever free for a total of 6 weeks since she was 6 months old. She had over 7 ear infections 6 months and then we decided to get her the tubes a month ago. We decided for a long time if it would be worth the risks and the ear infection before the surgery lasted 3 weeks after being prescribed over 5 antibotics and having 3 shots. Well I thought these tubes were a god send until 3 weeks after the tubes I am sitting here again with a sick child. My pediatrician says that the puss in her ear is too thick to fit through the tube. My baby has been on antibotics this time around for 5 days and still has to be given tylenol at least once a day to control her fever. Nothing works and my kid is miserable and I am about to have a nervous break down. Is she ever going to get better?? She has been sick most of her life and is it ever going to end?? The surgery didn't work, the medicine doesnt work, and what kind of harm is this doing to her body to have a fever all the time and be sick?? The doctors say my kid is very rare that the tubes don't work but I just can't believe this is happening....is there anyone out there that has had this problem and what do I do about it? |

Ear infections that don't go away! | | I do not have experience with this but my suggestions would be: ENT possibly a second opinion, really go over her diet, maybe allergy testing. For you: a break every day if you can take it. I'm so sorry your baby has been so stressful it will get better.

Antibiotics can sometimes make infections worse, they could be giving her the wrong anti biotics. Make sure you are seeing a DR and not a PA or NP. You should be giving Motrin and not Tylonol. Motrin is an anti inflamatory and Tylonol is not. He should be recommending antibiotic ear drops. She could have a bacterial infection. Have you been to an ear nose and throat Dr yet? Sinus drainage could easily cause ear infections if not treated with the correct antibiotics. She needs an CT scan to look at her sinus and ear canals. Good luck. Stick to your guns momma. PS. Lysol is a pesticide and not safe for children. Be careful what you are cleaning with. |

| Re: HELP! Ear infections that don't go away! | | Your poor little girl! And poor you for having to go through this with her!
I assume you went to an ENT for the tubes. If not, I agree with the suggestion to see a peds ENT as this is their specialty.
It may be too early depending on the antibiotics, but if the antibiotics have failed has your doc cultured the pus/junk from her ears to 1) determine the exact bugs involved, and 2) (as important) to determine which antibiotics will be effective against the bugs (i.e., ran a sensitivities study on the culture)? This usually isn't done until several broad-spectrum antibiotics have failed, but it may be worth asking whether it has been done to be sure.
I hope she feels better soon. |

Also consider getting all milk out of her diet. Many kids have ear infections due to milk problems. If she is on formula still, go to a non dairy kind, if she is nursing still, drop dairy from your diet. If you feel she has to have milk, try going to almond milk or rice milk for a few weeks and see if that helps her out.
I hope she feels better soon. |

Children: I only have one daughter | Re: HELP! Ear infections that don't go away! | | Hi everyone! Thanks so much for the input. Vivian has been to the ENT she is who put the tubes in her ears. I actually called her first when Viv got a fever two weeks after the tubes and this is the response I got, "She has the tubes there is NO way that it is an ear infection. The tubes would be draining so it has to be something else. Take her to the pediatrician if the fever persists becuase she might have a bug." So I waited and waited and then it happened again and we found out it WAS an ear infection. The Ped gave her the floacin drops for her ears, an antibotic, and zyrtec for allergys this time. However, Viv doesn't seem to have any sign of allergys so I don't know. I guess I am just going to have to keep taking her until they figure it out. It's just so frustrating to watch your baby wake up in the morning EVERYDAY and 20 mins later she has a fever. The nurses at the dr's office and the dr's are looking at me in amazement which makes me very uneasy because if these professionals don't understand it how am I supposed to? I just want the best for her and I just wish there was someone out there that could say "Hey I have been through this and my kid is 4 now and she just grew out of it and is much better." |

I sometimes wonder if I should have my PhD. I went to the ER with my daughter because I knew she had strep. They wanted to put an IV in her arm and give her fluids because that is the "norm" to do to sick people. I said "before you do that could you test her for strep?" Sure enough it was strep. I knew as soon as I could get her fever down she would be hydrated so the huge needle that would have freaked my daughter out was not needed. The Dr came in and said "I guess you are a better clinician then I am" Duhhhhh Go with your mommy gut ALWAYS! If they insist on something ask for proof. That is YOUR child. Do your homework on everything, get on the computer and research several different websites and educate yourself on everything child. Hope she is better soon! |

Children: 4yo girl 1yo boy | Re: HELP! Ear infections that don't go away! | | Going along with what Music Mom said, what do you think may be the problem? This may be me typing out my butt but my hubbys aunt had juvenille diabetis. DH grandma always talks about how his aunt had these fevers off and on for years before they discovered the diabetis. Also what about the tonsoills and adnoids could they contributing to the ear problem? I hate your ENT answer I would get a second opinion. I hope your both having a decent day.
