Children: Two Children. A daughter aged 3 and a half, Jasmine Jade. A son aged four months, Damien Drake | I am in potty training hell | | Yes, that wonderful milestone of potty training is giving me grey hairs My three and a half year old daughter has successfully mastered the art of peeing in the toilet...it's the other bit that is the cause of distress. She refuses to poo in the toilet, not verbally but by her actions. She quite merrily soils her knickers and is not at all phased to waltz about in said state for the rest of the day! It just doesn't bother her. She has poo'ed on the toilet once, for which she was incredibly praised. My problems lie in the fact that she won't complete this last stage of the potty training process. The poor child is dying to go to school, but where I stay out in the middle of nowhere there is only one pre-school that won't take her unless she is fully potty trained. I've tried using it as a motivation for her, along with star charts, bribing, taking away certain privileges, letting her not wear underwear so she has no option but to use the toilet etc. All to no avail. She has had this problem since January, before the birth of my second child. I don't know whether this is contributing to the problem emotionally as I do still spend as much time with her as possible. So, I ask, does anyone have anything (yes, anything. Desperate times call for desperate measures) in the way of advice for my situation? |

I think I would talk to her Dr. also never never punish her for this...that will only set you back farther. she may just be looking for your attention but My first step would be to have a chat with the dr about this

Children: Son(17),DD(16),Son(16),DD(15),Son(7), DD(4),Son(2 years) | Re: I am in potty training hell | | I agree with Fallon, it could be medical, I had a friend who's son would do the samething and like you she was at the end of her rope, if the advice was given she tried it. At Dr's appt she mentioned that he would poo his pants, and seemed fine with the fact, other then he knew he would get in trouble, they did a work up on him and there was somthing wrong, I can't remember the specifics, it has been a while, but once they gave him some medicine and a regiment he had to do at home, he quit within a week, she felt so bad cause all along it wasn't his fault. I would start there, and then try something else, I have no real suggestion, it sounds more like a struggle for power, Have you made her clean up after herself, wash out her own clothes that kinda thing, that works for a lot of kids, where bribery and charts don't.
Good Luck!

Yes, I have made her clean up after herself, much to her disgust- and it didn't work. So she's going to go off to the doc, just so we can rule out any medical problems. |

 | Re: I am in potty training hell | | Potty training can be very difficult with some babies. You must be very careful and patience, don't get angry when trying to teach your baby girl to use the potty.

Children: DD (10) and DS (12) | Re: I am in potty training hell | | She could have encopresis. Soiling (Encopresis)
Or she could just be a late potty trainer. BTDT with my DS. We tried everything but nothing worked. In total frustration, we gave up and backed off. Once the pressure was gone HE started taking care of business on his own without prompting. In hind sight, it had turned into a power struggle. HE wanted to learn on HIS terms, not ours. |

Children: Alexander (3 - eek!), James (16 mths) | Re: I am in potty training hell | | I hear you. My little fella is completely day trained for wees, but has no problem doing #2's in his undies! soooo frustrating! He hates it when I change him and i hadnt thought of the cleaning himself up idea - so that might work!
Very interesting link about the soiling! I watch uot for this as his are the size of cricket balls and he groans. He also "assumes the position" when about to go, but refuses to go to the toilet! |
