Children: Nichole | lactose intolerant | | Well Nichole no longer has diarrhea, Not sure I even said she did, lol. She had it for a month, but most of the last 5 months have been relaly loose as well. We eliminated ALL dairy from her diet, and walaa the diarrhea is gone. Of course I tried a small amount of mac and cheese ( didn't even add milk, just the powder and water) and within 6 hours she had really bad green mucussy diarrhea. and really bad gas pains all night. So no dairy for her! Darn kid. lol She is now on Soy milk (which she is not drinking very muc) so I tried Rice milk, seems to be okay with her! Ok thanks for listening |

| Re: lactose intolerant | | I am so glad that you found out what the problem was. The next challenge will be to get other people to understand that she is to have no dairy, but that should be fairly easy compared to the stomach problems it causes.
Congratulations! |

| Re: lactose intolerant | | What a relief to have a sense of what's going on! My son was a lot like that as a infant/toddler. His immune system was very slow to develop (the joys of preemies!) and his digestive tract wasn't able to tolerate lactose. One of the things that we had to do that i would mention is supplement his diet with B12 because kids usually get it from cow's milk or formula. Soy milk and/or rice milk don't contain this vitamin. |

Children: Nichole | Re: lactose intolerant | | She still nurses as well, so she gets B-12 from there. But thank you I appreciate the knowledge you have about it. She hopefully will only be off of the dairy for two weeks. Her doctor thinks it is diarrhea induced. As she had a virus that caused the diarrhea, since she had it for so long it made her temporarily lactose intolerant. So in two weeks, we can slowly try to add it back into her diet. She's a really good eater, loves brocali and mushrooms, and even eats black olives with her daddy, lol. She has only ever turned her nose up at peas. lol So hopefully this will pass, if not we will survive. lol |

Children: I have two young daughters | Re: lactose intolerant | | My oldest daughter was lactose intolerant. We had a TERRIBLE time with her, but good news is sometimes they do outgrow it. She had HORRIBLE colic for the first four months of her life. Here I was taking care of this poor baby on my way with very little help and she was always in pain crying. The doctors switched her formulas around many times trying to help her out, because of the colic she wasn't even wanting to eat much. They finally ended up putting her on one of the most expensive formulas out there which was $25 bucks for a small can. But it seemed to help her. She was even having trouble with soy formulas. Then at a year old when she was to go off formula and start off on regular milk, she would get the dirareha really bad. She flat out refused to drink it. So the doctors said she was lactose intolerant, but that she might grow out of it. To just keep her off dairy for awhile. I did as I was told and about 15-16 months old I tried dairy again and it gave her no problem. As of today, she has no problems with milk or dairy. Thank goodness!!

Children: Nichole | Re: lactose intolerant | | Well we are passed the 3 weeks of no dairy and were told we can try to reintroduce it back in her diet. So far so good. She had icecream 3 nights ago, no diarrhea no cramping, she had mac and cheese 2 nights ago, same thing no problem. Last night we did a glass of organic milk and she had a regular bowl movement today!!! YAY I think we are back to normal now!!!! I am still taking it slow though, just small amounts at a time.
Sillygurl- I am glad your dd is able to have dairy now. Your story is so familiar to me dealing with breastfeeding. Most infants cannot tolerate formula well. Gassy babies, colick is not normal, there is a problem. I'm sorry that you had to go through so many types of formula before you found one that your dd would tolerate. It is a good lesson to teach other moms to be though. Once you choose not to breastfeed, if your child has problems with formula, there is no turning back. Relactation although possible is ectremely difficult. |

Children: I have two young daughters | Re: lactose intolerant | | I did try to breastfeed with both kids. Both times I had no luck. I dried up just as soon as I got my milk. :-( You are lucky for being able to!
